Manic

“You good?” I asked as soon as I hopped out the whip and helped her into my car. When I told her that I was in Delaware, she didn’t believe me.

I helped her off the curb and into the car. Jumping in the whip, I turned and faced her. Her lip was busted, and her makeup was fucked up from the tears that fell down her cheeks. This nigga put his fucking hands on her again, and the shit had me fucking pissed. I couldn’t understand why she continued to allow him to put his hands on her. What was it about him that caused him to have this hold over her? Seeing her beautiful face battered was something that I couldn’t take anymore. Paisley was so fucking beautiful, smart, and had a bomb personality. For the life of me, I couldn’t or rather, I didn’t understand why she was allowing this nigga to put his hands on her and do her the way he was. After that kiss yesterday, my feelings for her developed. It was easy to have a crush when I didn’t know her. All I knew was that she was beautiful and saw her walk past my store to head to the bus nearly every day. Now that I had gotten to know her, I wanted to be with her and protect her from anything that could cause her harm. How could I do that when she was protecting the very person who was causing her harm.

“Manic, stop looking at me like that.” She broke me from my trance.

“What you mean?”

“You’re looking at me like you feel bad or you’re disappointed. I can’t tell, but I know it’s one of those things.”

“Nah. I’m just trying to understand why you keep putting yourself though this shit?” I reached over and kissed her on the lips, and she winced in pain. Pulling back, I started the car and drove off. “You’re coming to my crib.”

“I can’t,” she protested.

“That nigga left you in the middle of nowhere in another state. He didn’t come back for you, and you going to go home to him?” My anger was trying to come out, so I gripped the steering wheel tighter. How the fuck could she sit here and tell me that she couldn’t come with me? If I didn’t drive up to Delaware, who knew what the fuck would have happened to her? The shit didn’t make any sense to me, and I tried hard to make sense of what the fuck she was telling me.

“If I don’t go home, it’ll be worst. Can you just drop me off at the train station near my house?” She sniffled.

“Pai—”

“Manic, not tonight, please. Too much has happened tonight, and I really don’t want to talk about it right now. You don’t know how much I appreciate you for being there for me. I really do.” She touched my arm and stared at me as I drove on the highway.

“Then you would leave him. I can’t keep doing this shit with you.
