Chapter Eight

Sebastian

Sebastian and Daniel knew better than to question their leader by this point, but that didn’t mean they weren’t curious as to where she was taking them.

“Ask her where we’re headed,” Sebastian hissed at Daniel.

Daniel heaved a sigh. He shouted from several steps behind her, “¿Dónde vamos?”

Carmela replied, “¡Es una sorpresa!”

Sebastian didn’t need Daniel to translate to know what that meant. A surprise? He’d already had so many surprises for one day, among them the fact that Carmela could be so playful. It was appealing. And that little push she gave him?

“Daniel—”

“I swear to God, Sebastian—”

“Please.”

Daniel blew the air out of his cheeks. “Let me guess. You want to tell her she’s beautiful?”

Sebastian felt the heat rise in his cheeks. “You know, if I knew a lick of Spanish, I’d be doing this all myself. You know that, right?”

“I know, I know, but for Pete’s sake, Collins. I’m better equipped to ask her where the bathroom is than to flirt with her for you.”

“Please? All I’m asking for is the words to tell her she’s pretty. Give me anything.”

Daniel sighed. “All right, but only because we’ve bonded. And by that, of course, I mean upchucked into the same pot.”

The crude comment was meant to make Sebastian laugh and loosen up, he knew, but this was too important for him to relax. The day was half over already, and he wanted to make sure Carmela knew that if she felt anything for him, anything at all, he reciprocated. And he was willing to cram as many Spanish phrases into his brain as possible to prove it.

“Okay,” Daniel said, rubbing his chin. “Now that I think about it, there are lots of ways to call her pretty—linda, bonita, hermosa…”

“Well, which of them is the prettiest out of all three?”

Daniel stayed quiet for a minute. Sweat accumulated on Sebastian’s brow, and his palms, too. He looked around, looking for something to distract him while Daniel was occupied. On their right, people filed into a grand stadium.

He recalled the advertisements around his office for the raffle that won him the ticket. One of the many bullet points was daily sporting events—mostly football—between Spain and one of the other participating countries. He wasn’t the biggest sports fan in the world, though he did play rugby with his company’s team when they were first starting out, but he bowed out when the largest guy in the office was finally persuaded to join the team. Better to let him have the spot, he figured.

“Hey, Collins?”

Sebastian returned to the present. “Yes?”

“I’ve got it,” Daniel said, rubbing his hands together. “You’re going to tell her, Eres hermosa.”

Sebastian raised an eyebrow. “You’re sure it’s supposed to be hermosa, not hermoso?”

“I’m dead sure. What I don’t know for sure is whether you should use estas or eres, but—no, wait a moment, I’m pretty sure I had it right the first time. Well, come on, let’s hear you say it!”

Sebastian sighed. “Air-es hair-mosa.”

“Well, you’re not wrong,” Daniel grumbled, “but you’re not really doing the language justice.
