Chapter

Propping up the seat’s cushion so he could sit and still see through the rain-spattered windshield, Eli used the chair rather than keep fighting his balance with the waves battering the boat, tossing them up and down and side to side.

Eli hadn’t lied to Livvy. Not completely. He had been in contact with Mercedes and Shawn. Shawn was working with him to figure out where to navigate based on what he could see of the boat and phone’s location, when either was reading correctly, and where Barbados was. The navigation on the boat system would not work. ‘No connection’ flashed on the screen. He was using the compass and rain-soaked, tattered map. The strong westerly wind was throwing him off course. Way off course.

The thing he hadn’t admitted to Livvy—last time Shawn called, and he heard some of the man’s frantic words before the call dropped, Shawn had sounded more stressed than Eli wanted to hear. Shawn had insisted that not only was Eli really far off course to the west, the storm was now predicted to worsen before it got better.

The phone calls after that one, maybe forty minutes ago, dropped almost immediately. Eli had no information or coordinates. He’d corrected to the east, but didn’t dare correct too far and shoot them off into the ocean with no inhabited land masses until Africa.

As a captain of Delta Force he’d trained himself not to feel fear. He’d felt it when Lieutenant John Argyle, Squints to all the guys, on the mission to find Bennett and his men in Syria, had stepped on a landmine fifty feet after they’d landed in their chutes.

John had been killed instantly and Eli’s leg had taken a bad hit. He’d had to ignore it and push on. Once the Syrians were neutralized, and Bennett and the six other men who’d survived their captivity were on the plane, he’d let his guard down. Their medic, Pete, had cut away the shredded material and controlled the bleeding as Eli gritted his teeth through the pain. They’d all realized instantly, his leg was a mess. He’d been terrified to lose his leg, knowing it would end his career and rewrite his life plan. Even then, he’d known he’d have Livvy, his family, and God to help him through.

Irreparable damage. How many times had he heard that term as he was flown to the closest military hospital in Turkey, studied by multiple doctors, and prepped for surgery.

His fears had been founded. He’d lost everything, including Livvy. Though Livvy’s loss had little to do with his amputation. Well, maybe him never coming for her had driven her solidly into Jarom’s arms, but she’d already been happily residing there.

Right now he felt that fear, the fear of losing everything. This time it was Livvy’s life he was worried about. The jealousy and anger at her choosing Jarom felt far away at the moment. He couldn’t let Livvy down and be lost at sea, let her drown. Livvy might not be
