‘put up thy swerde,’ saide the coke,

‘And felowes woll we be’.36

Here is one who will be a good fellow. The idea that a good fellow is understood to be a true and trusted member of the fellowship becomes clear in Robin Hood and the Potter. The opening twenty-eight stanzas portray an admission ritual to the fellowship. The postulant in this version is, of course, an artisan, not a knight or squire. He is described to begin with as a proud potter, one who is always travelling through the forest without paying a toll (pavage) to Robin. In fact he has already had the better of Little John, who once tried to levy it. As the action begins, Robin lays a wager that he can outdo him. But in the confrontation the potter gets the better of Robin as well, who has to be rescued by his men (watching to see who would win). Robin concedes he has lost his wager. The potter now complains that this is no way to treat a poor yeoman going about his honest trade.37 Robin admits he ‘seys god yemenrey’ and agrees that he will never be hindered again. He continues:
