Sobbing, Vanessa’s stormed into their hotel suite and sat on the edge of the bed. Pulling her knees to her chest, she hid her face behind her hands with a shudder.

“Baby, are you all right?” Miles asked, kneeling on the floor beside her. “Baby, talk to me,” he pleaded, tugging at her elbow.

Still crying, Vanessa snatched her arm away.

“Are you okay?” he asked again. “Babe!”

“No, I’m not okay, Miles!” She looked up, her eyes watery, her cheeks streaked with tears and mascara. Combing her fingers through her tousled hair, she glared at him. “Who were those guys? Were they trying to kill you?”

“Baby, just relax,” Miles said soothingly. “I was just trying to diffuse the situation.”

“It had nothing to do with you!” she shrieked. “It was between Martin and whoever that guy was.”

“So what was I supposed to do?” Miles asked. “Leave him out there alone? Let some dude just blow his head off? Is that what you’re telling me?” He shook his head. “I don’t think so, babe.”

The mattress squeaked beneath Vanessa’s shifting weight. “So, you’re willing to give up everything, including your own life, for something that had nothing to do with you?”

“Yes!” he exclaimed loudly. “And they would do the same for me.” Miles sighed. “Baby, look,” he said after a few moments, his voice decidedly calmer. “A few years ago, this whole thing would have turned out a lot different.”

Vanessa shook her head and looked away.

“I was just trying to get us out of there safe,” he insisted. “That’s it.”

“Really? Then would you like to tell me why there was a gun in your car?” Her question echoed throughout the small space of the room.

“I already told you, babe. Whenever I do shows like this, there’s always large amounts of cash around. You know that! You see it!” Frustrated, he popped open the briefcase resting at the foot of the bed. Inside was tens of thousands of dollars, stacked and wrapped in neat bundles. “Look!”

Vanessa refused.

“What do want me to do?” he asked, slamming the case shut. “Listen.” Inching closer, he wrapped his arms around her. “I know this whole situation—everything that’s happening—is all new to you. But you gotta understand, V. When it comes to protecting you, my family, my friends… I’ll do anything, babe.” He felt her relax into his embrace.

“I thought I was gonna lose you,” she sniffled.

“C’mon, baby,” he said, stroking her back.

“No. Really, Miles,” her voice cracked. “I don’t wanna feel that way again. Ever.” Wriggling loose from his grip, she sat back and held his gaze with her own. “Promise me I’ll never lose you.”

“I promise,” he said, wiping away her tears as they fell from her chin. “I ain’t going nowhere.”

Vanessa edged closer. “Give me your hands.” Miles obeyed as she bowed her head. “Heavenly Father,” she began. “Thank You for your watch, care, and protection over us. We come before You, grateful for a wonderful day spent together. And we give You praise for another successful event. Be with Miles.
