Chapter 38

Tiffany

I closed my eyes tight as I thanked God for saving me from myself. I wanted Terrence more than he knew, but not in that way. I could tell that he felt the same, and I sensed that we both felt disappointment and relief at the same time. I allowed my body to snuggle a little closer to him while I took in his scent. His eyes were closed. However, I knew he hadn’t fallen asleep just yet.

I softly whispered in his ear, “Thank you, Terrence.”

It took him a moment to respond, but when he did, it seemed as if it were hard for him to get it out. He almost seemed a bit choked up. “You don’t have to thank me,” he said.

A few more minutes went by as we both lay there in silence. It must have been hard for either of us to fall asleep. I heard him say my name. “Tiffany.”

“Yes.”

“Tell me something that you’ve never told anyone else. Tell me your dreams and desires.”

“My dreams and desires, huh?”

“Yes. If there were one thing in the world you would do that no one else knows about, what would it be?”

“You promise not to laugh at me?” I turned to face him.

“Sure I wouldn’t,” he said, but I could tell he was already chuckling on the inside.

“All right, here goes. My dream is to one day be a New York Times bestselling author.”

He immediately started to crack a smile, and I sat up and playfully hit his arm.

“See, you promised not to laugh.”

“All right, all right, forgive me. But I’m only laughing because I already knew that from your Facebook page. I just wanted to hear you say it. What kind of books would you write, anyway?”

“Novels about love and romance. For once I want to read a book where the two people fall head over heels in love with one another without having to go through a ton of hardship first. I want to write about them building a life and family together and basically having it all.”

“Do you really think that’s possible in real life, though?”

“I do. If the two people love one another enough, I believe they can have everything their hearts desire.”

I made myself comfortable again lying under him as we both stared at the ceiling. I almost drifted off when I heard him say something.

“I Didn’t Think You Existed.”

“What? What are you talking about?”

“The title for your first book. I Didn’t Think You Existed.”

“Terrence, that actually sounds amazing.”

“And you have to promise that, no matter when, I will get the first autographed copy.”

“I can promise that. As long as you promise that I’ll get a free meal at Montgomery’s Barbeque and Soul Food restaurant.”

“Wait, what? Now how did you know about that? I never told you.”

“You didn’t, but Monica did. She told me what a great chef you are.”

“Yeah, but—”

“No buts. Remember, we can have everything our hearts desire.”

Terrence kissed me again, and this time I didn’t stop him. There was no way I could deny the chemistry between us, and we both needed one another.
