A few hours later, I woke with a naked G curled up in my arms. We’d fallen asleep holding one another on the bed, which turned into a blissful afternoon nap. Sitting up, I brushed the hair from her naked shoulder, and she wiggled next to me. Rolling over, she turned and faced me with a yawn.

“Hey you.” Her hand landed on my cheek.

I jutted my chin to her with a wink, saying hey back.

“That was a good nap.”

I nodded in agreement as I tucked her hair behind her ear. “Room sexy?” I teased her, signing with just one hand since my other was tucked beneath the pillow.

She gave me a half-hearted grin that seemed quite forced. “Yeah. Sexy room.” She rolled over and faced the ceiling, resting her hand on her head.

I propped up on one elbow, moving my free hand slightly forward and to one side, furrowing my brow. “What?”

“Nothing.” She shook her head, worrying her lip once again.

I rolled my eyes. I knew damn well when a woman said nothing that it usually meant something. I poked her in the side and repeated, a little more forcefully, “What?”

“Why don’t you have any pictures of your wife?” she finally blurted out.

Ouch. I wasn’t expecting that punch to the gut.

Suddenly, it dawned on me. That was what this was all about? Her snooping through my bedroom, eyeing my photos so intently the past few days? She wanted to see what my wife had looked like? Why? To size up the competition? Well, there was no competition because Alex was dead.

She sat up, clutching the sheet to her chest with one hand, waving the other to my room. “It’s like she never even lived here.” She shook her head as she ran her fingers through her disheveled locks.

Another blow, straight to the chest. That one hurt even worse, knocking the air out of my lungs. I sat up, the room starting to spin. Suddenly I was that kid again, in the lunchroom backed into the corner, being kicked while I was already down.

“It’s obvious this house was built for her…” she reached out and put a hand on my arm and I instinctively jerked away. “…for a family.”

And we have a knockout. I was down for the count. Why, oh, why out of all the words did she have to say those? Not after the moment that we just shared.

I stood, barreled into the bathroom, and splashed some cold water on my face, hoping to get my racing heart to steady. G followed me. I knew she wasn’t trying to be cruel. She was only trying to make sense of it all. But she had no clue the vault she was trying to pry open, and she had no right, not yet. Not with whatever secrets she was harboring as well.

I pushed past her and dug through my dresser, throwing on a fresh pair of boxers and sweatpants. Out of the corner of my eye I could see her mouth moving, still talking, but I couldn’t even look at her face to try and listen.
