CHAPTER FIFTY

Auk

If only me of two years ago could see me now. If the image came to me from some spirit man’s vision, I would assume that the worst of all my nightmares had come true. I had not only been put into retirement, I had become sponsored as some omega court’s pet. And in addition to my regular duties of walking in parades and marches, I would abhorrently be expected to attend dinners and talk about my memories for the amusement of others.

I would have run. I would have run into the jungle and never looked back.

Instead, now, not only am I growing softer and spoiled, I am also working harder than ever. And I find the games at the capitol rather enjoyable. I have not learned to be charming, but I don’t have to be. Carter’s exotic origin and solitary nature have turned my silence into a weapon capable of cutting through anything. And anyone. Much like Siel’s sword of light.

For instance, today I am absolutely gloating (on the inside) over the chest of spoils I secured for Omega Carter. From Affek’s own omega grandfather, who gained a position at the ceremony thanks to ‘Carter’s’ wishes.

We are an extremely odd court. Carter has little patience and no training for traditional omega duties. Every one of us acts on our own and pretends to do so with his guidance. I have begun to suspect that Siel may be the real omega of this family unless Carter speaks up.

But regardless of who is in charge, we act on behalf of our smallest member. A tiny, fat pup clinging to Carter’s shirt when he walks in, following Ruahyr and several others.

“There is Big Fire,” Affek says, with a subtle disapproving flick of his tail.

Big Fire, Firestorm, Thunder, and (Carter’s favorite) You Little Monster are the chosen monikers for a sweet-faced baby that can only grow into the most elegant fleaf’akhie ever born. Truly. I believe he will be petite like Carter, and with eyes like that, he’s likely to get anything he wants out of life.

I imagine he’ll be a dancer. Something that requires beauty and a perfect form.

His fathers have other visions of him. They’ve taken the spirit man’s reading to heart. I’ve kept to myself how wrong that fool is. Ruahyr rightly called him out, and now that I understand more of the politics in Capital City, I realize that the spirit man was trying to stir up trouble (and earn a regular customer) by giving Carter a bad vision.

Burning Tree is someone who betrays his family.

There is no end to the stabbing in the Council. Among the halls of this building, there is an intellectual war that spares no one.

I intend to make sure that we exist outside of it.

“I think we should call him something normal,” Affek says. “It’s bad for a kid to be shaped by a vision like that.”

This has been weighing on our minds. The pup’s moniker has become more common as he has begun noticing his world and asserting himself.
