Rule #6: Sometimes You Lose “The One”

Their night together was disturbingly quiet. Alana didn’t think that she had anything else to say to Paul. But Paul’s silence was what unnerved her. Paul was never quiet. He was the life of the party, the man about the town, the great initiator of any and all things fun and exciting in his world. He wasn’t the kind of man who could quiet down about anything. Alana wondered if her words had really resonated with him. Maybe he was thinking this through. Maybe this would be the catalyst for change.

In the evening after dinner time, Alana was starting to worry. Paul’s noted silence was starting to make her think that something was wrong. She knew that she’d been in the right so whatever Paul was struggling with had to be internal.

Eventually, he made his way over to Alana where she was reading on the chair.

“Alana,” He said, “Can we talk?”

Alana felt a lump in her throat. She had no qualms about talking to Paul usually, especially not about difficult things, but she could tell from the look on his face that this wouldn’t be one of those conversations that ended in something positive.

“Sure.”

Paul sat down across from Alana and buried his head in his hands.

“I’ve been thinking for a while Alana and what I think is we need to stop seeing each other.”

Alana looked at him in surprise. Paul had begged her not to do anything impulsive and end their relationship. He’d begged her to come all the way to Martha’s Vineyard and leave behind a summer of earnings. She loved him. She’d sacrificed everything comfortable for him and now he was suggesting throwing it all away…

“Paul, are you serious?”

Paul nodded grimly.

“I’ve put you through a lot Alana and I can’t stand to put you through any more pain. I know I have a lot of work to do but that doesn’t mean you have to suffer while I do it.”

“I’m not suffering!”

“Yes, yes you are Alana. I can see your hurt even if you try to hide it from me.”

“But if you break up with me, how am I going to get back to Atlanta?!”

Alana was getting frantic. She couldn’t emotionally process what was happening. She wanted to beg Paul not to do this but she could tell that he couldn’t be convinced otherwise. Paul was the type of man who was immovable once he’d decided upon something. While he could always change her mind, Alana had never had the same power over Paul.

Paul nodded at her question, “Listen, I have it all worked out Alana. I’ll book the next flight out of here tomorrow and I’ll transfer $20,000 to your account to make up for the trouble I’ve put you through this summer. You still won’t have to work or anything.”

“Paul, I can’t accept $20,000 from you.”

“You can,” He continued, “You know that I can afford to do this Alana so just let’s end this alright? We’ll have a clean break and you can start your life over once the final semester picks up.
