CHAPTER FOURTEEN

MARIA BIT HER lip as she waited for the carriage to arrive at the Lyledell house. It was only a few days ago that Curtis had declared himself and scandalously imposed himself as a soon-to-be son-in-law. Her mother quickly forgave their… indiscretion, as soon as the proper arrangements had been made, and she hadn’t stopped planning the wedding since. Of course, that the banns hadn’t been read was a small detail, the only force strong enough to rein her mother in from shouting it to the world.

With a smug grin, Lady Moray met Maria’s gaze from across the carriage. “I knew it,” she said for the thousandth time.

And truthfully, Maria had to give her that concession. She had suspected Curtis’ intentions far before she had, odd that.

As the carriage stopped in front of the grand staircase, Maria was immediately swept up into the vibrant Society that was London’s le bon ton. Curtis was attentive as always, his secret grins a constant delight as he would always scandalously touch her hip or caress her hand when he thought no one was watching. Or perhaps he simply didn’t give a whit. How she loved him!

“Care to dance? I have it on good authority that the next song will be a waltz.” He grinned dangerously, and her insides burned with a smoldering heat.

“Of course.” And sure enough, as the music began, it was, indeed, a waltz.

“Have I told you how utterly delicious you look tonight?” Curtis spoke seductively as he pulled her in far too close.

“Once or twice. At least this time, you’ll notice what color of dress I’m wearing,” she spoke archly.

“I always noticed,” he replied sharply, though his eyes danced. “I merely forced myself to not look too closely. A man has only so much willpower. I had to ignore you if I was to keep my sanity at all.” He smiled, all traces of his parents’ legacy erased from his expression.

“You did not ignore me.” Maria rolled her eyes slightly at his overreaction.

“Ha! That’s where you’re wrong. I did, and it was very difficult to not notice how your waist is the perfect shape for my hand…” He squeezed his hand slightly, emphasizing his point. “Or the way your height is perfect for stealing a kiss…“ He leaned forward as if about to attempt to do so in the middle of the ballroom.

Maria leaned back, narrowing her eyes. She didn’t want to cause that much of a scandal. When they were married, that would be different. Married. In time, she would be Mrs. Curtis Sheppard. A mere sir, he wasn’t titled, but never had it mattered to her. Anyway, she would much rather marry for love.

And she was certainly getting her preference!

“Afraid?” he asked, pulling her thoughts back to the present.

“Of?”

“Me?” he replied darkly.

“No more than usual.” She bit her lip and glanced away, noticing for the first time a dark-haired beauty who looked vaguely familiar.

Curtis must have followed her gaze. “That is Miss Beatrix Lamont.” He answered her unasked question.
