When I’d listened long enough to Stefan’s presentations and ideas being summarily dismissed, I loudly declared, “Enough! Follow me!” and led the whole team from the conference room to the factory floor, where I pointed to an old machine covered with dirt and grease.

“I don’t know anything about manufacturing,” I said, “but I know our equipment, even the outdated, shouldn’t look like this!” From that moment on, my team paid attention to Stefan—and to me.

Making change happen in an organization is never easy. Overcoming internal resistance takes vision, clarity, empathy, patience, and persistence. But eventually, a moment comes when a leader needs to say, “Enough!” and lead the troops over the barricades. Look for that moment, and be prepared to take advantage when it arrives.
