​ When you review the road map what do you notice about your own course?

When faced with a road sign, do you always turn left?

What if you turned right?

Do you drive slow or fast?

Do you eschew tourist traps?

Do you stop at every historical marker? (Looking at you, dad).

Do you avoid travel all together?

What would happen if you just kept driving east?

​ This exercise is not meant to create a morass of grief and regrets. And it’s not meant to encourage you to wallow in the past. An exercise like this can point to your “shoulds”, your internal obligations. If you can identify those obligations, imposed internally or (often) imposed externally, and if you can sketch them out and review them, maybe you can change how you regard them, maybe even move past them.
