Chapter Five

Beauty

I jumped up out of my sleep hearing the commercial for some kind of diabetes medication. Devil was still knocked out beside me lightly snoring with one hand tucked inside his shorts. Just looking at him sleep, he almost seemed peaceful. Like he didn’t just murder a man in cold blood yesterday. I swear I just did not get him. It’s like one minute he could be so nice and loving, then the next he could be just pure…evil. Every time he acted irrationally, I understood how and why he gained the name Devil.

Taking a long stretch, I stood up from the leather chair I fell asleep on. The theatre room was so dark I wasn’t able to see outside to know what time it was or if the sun had come up yet. Peering down at a sleeping Devil, I noticed his phone laying against his chest and couldn’t shake the thoughts of calling Rell. It’d been three days since I was taken from my house, and I just did not see going home in the cards for me. The guilt ate at me knowing he was probably out there losing his mind trying to get me back while I was up in here kicking it with my so-called abductor. There were times like last night when it didn’t even feel like I was being held against my will, that’s what made it all the more confusing.

After mentally debating on taking the phone for about five minutes, I finally worked up enough courage to tiptoe over to him and quietly picked up his iPhone from off his chest. Tapping the screen, I saw it had facial recognition so I waved the camera in front of his face and was granted access. I pressed the phone icon keying in Rell’s phone number while occasionally glancing up to make sure Devil was still knocked out. Hitting send, I waited impatiently as the line trilled.

“Pick up, pick up,” I whispered to myself.

“Who’s this?” Rell’s deep voice finally answered causing my heart to flutter.

“It’s me.”

“Beauty? Boo, please tell me you good and that crazy nigga ain’t touch you.”

“I’m okay. He hasn’t hurt me or anything like that. I’m just ready to come home. Were you able to get the money and stuff together? How much longer is it going to be?” The phone fell silent. “Rell?”

“Boo, momma gone.”

My heart sank. I prayed I heard him wrong. “What?”

“She gone. That sick nigga Devil sent some niggas through there last night and they aired her shit out.”

“He—He did what?”

“Yeah. I got a call from West Orange Police asking me to go identify the body. Her and Meesh were hit five times,” his voice cracked. “I’m fucked up, I ain’t even gonna hold you. I’ma skin that nigga alive when I get my hands on him.”

Confusion filled me as I tried to figure out what Devil would do something so…evil. He’d given Rell time to get his shit back and promised no harm would come to us, only turn around and do just that.
