CHAPTER SIXTEEN—NICHOLAS

Something was wrong, but Nicholas couldn’t put his finger on what it was. It had been nearly two weeks since the elders had called the convocation, and the investigations that his family, the Egan family, and Nima had all been working on seemed to be developing more or less the way that he would have expected. That’s what it is, he thought, pressing his lips together as he waited outside of Cami’s room for her to emerge. They had plans to go and talk to one of the bigger, more influential families that could make a difference in the convocation; Cami had asked Nicholas to wait outside while she settled the twins for their nap. Ever since the confrontation at Cami’s mother’s house, they had both been watching the twins for any other signs of their secondary abilities—to no real avail.

Normally, Nicholas would be in the room, helping Cami with the twins; but they had started getting “fussy,” as both Cassandra and Cami characterized it. They were both too old to really have colic, and they weren’t teething at the moment, but neither Callum nor Brigitte wanted to go to sleep when they were supposed to—there was too much interesting going on, and Nicholas privately thought neither of the kids was willing to risk missing a moment of life, even if they were exhausted to the point of being punch-drunk. If there was anyone else in the room with them, they kicked off and spurred each other on, but if it was just Cami alone—or just Cassandra alone—they tended to calm down much more readily. Maybe they think if it’s just Mom of Cassandra with them, they can’t possibly be missing out on much, Nicholas thought wryly.

He turned his thoughts back onto what was bothering him. Things were going far too smoothly. Nicholas argued with himself mentally; they were due a good turn, they all knew that the elders had done wrong, and they were doing everything right. But then again, they knew that the elders had depths of deviousness they didn’t always show. Were they underestimating Fintan, Vesta, and the others?

Nicholas had to admit to himself that it could very well be the case. They had been so consumed with trying to prove what the elders had done that they were open to some other attempt that the elders might make to force the hands of the rest of the dragon species. “We’ve already talked about that,” Nicholas pointed out to himself. All of them—Cami’s mates, as well as Miranda’s, and even Jordan and Nima—had agreed that they had to look out for the possibility of the elders trying something shifty. If not the elders, Nicholas knew, it was likely to come from the Azar family; they hadn’t gotten what they wanted out of their attack on Nima and Jordan and their battle over the Keane estate. But there were no obvious preparations underway.

“Then again, they didn’t seem to really be planning anything the last time, either.”
