CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Jordan

The Overton clan, sitting in the living room, looked about as uncomfortable as it was possible for three men to look. But then, Jordan thought, the Egans present—apart from Vanessa, Jamie’s mother—probably looked every bit as uncomfortable. When Vanessa had issued the order for Jamie, himself, and Alexander to be present and presentable, Jordan hadn’t argued; he knew the score. Dylan and Gabriel were spending the day with Cami, and while Jordan might wish he was in his cousin’s position instead, there was obviously politicking to be done.

“Thank you for having us,” Nicholas said. “I know there’s a long history of bad blood between your family and ours, but with things the way that they are…”

“If our clans are going to share access to the Keane heir, we’re going to have to live with each other,” Vanessa finished for him. “I understand, and I agree.”

“According to the Seer, Cami is going to have more than one child; at least one Overton and one Egan,” Nicholas continued. “I think it’s best if we sort out now what the conditions between our families will be, instead of waiting for the issue to become more pressing.”

“Very mature of you,” Vanessa said. She shifted in her seat, and Jordan resisted the urge to chuckle. Whenever Vanessa Egan took that tone of voice, he knew she was about to lay down the law, make demands.

“It’s a question of whose child she becomes pregnant with first, isn’t it?” Jamie pointed out. “If she has an Egan child first...”

“She’s more likely to have an Overton child first,” Elijah pointed out. “She’s had more sex with us than with your clan.”

“It just takes one sperm, uniting with one egg,” Vanessa countered. “The right time, the right sperm...who knows? And currently she’s having sex with one man from each family. I have to assume she has every intention of continuing in that vein.”

“So,” Nicholas said, and Jordan didn’t miss his heavy look at his cousin. “I am interested to hear what terms you have in mind, and then we can discuss which concessions my family is willing to make.”

“Before we get into the politics,” Jordan said. “Would anyone like something to drink?” It was his usual role in the kind of meeting they were having: to be the polite one, to be the one who extended hospitality.

“I’ll have anything you’re serving,” Nicholas said with a faint smile.

“Make some tea, Jordan,” Vanessa suggested. “Lapsang souchong, I think—that would suit everyone.” Jordan glanced at Jamie; his cousin hated tea, and had a particular dislike for his mother’s favorite brew. The smokiness of the tea was something many dragons tended to prefer, but Jamie had it in his head that it was too pretentious, too girly—a dozen things that had nothing to do with the tea itself and everything to do with his mother’s preference for it.

“I’ll just have a glass of water,” Jamie said. Jordan nodded and walked across the room to the setup that Vanessa kept for visits just like the one happening.
