Numbering in sequence according to district
In towns such as Mainz, Augsburg and Nuremberg a letter was allocated to each district of the town and the houses within the districts were numbered in sequence. The letter of the district was often put up on the house in addition to the number. Thus in Nuremberg, for example, where numbering was carried out in 1796 at the behest of the French occupation forces to simplify the billeting of the military, the houses in the two districts around St Sebald and St Lorenz had the house numbers S1 to S1706 and L1 to L1578 painted on the fronts respectively. 113 In Venice such a system – but without the allocation of a letter for each sestiere – has been in use right until the present, so it’s something of a challenge to find a house in that city on the Lagoon. 114
Numbering according to block
This was less common than the two other methods mentioned so far. Here a combination of numbers and letters were allocated to a block and the houses of this block were given a series of numbers. In Madrid, for example, a separate number was allocated to every block of houses (called manzana ) surrounded by streets and the houses of the block were numbered based on this. To locate an address it was therefore necessary to know the street name and the number of the block as well as the number of the house in the block. 115 In the centre of the town of Mannheim a similar system is still in use today, with every block of houses being allocated a letter and a number (for example, A1 or U6). Here the houses of every block are numbered either clockwise or anti-clockwise, a typical address being B2,5 or U7,3.
