Ross roamed the castle, realizing he was alone. He’d been home for two months and still did not feel comfortable. His thoughts went to the fields behind his home in America, and he wondered if Brodie tended to them. Once they were safely away from Gregor’s Cove, he’d instructed Brodie to give his horses, cows and goats to people living in the village who were in need.

Inside the New Jersey house, furniture had been covered with protective sheets, beds stripped of quilts and blankets and put into storage. It had seemed so final. Ross felt a tug on his heart and walked swiftly down the hall to his favorite turret. He and Glynis had many a sword fight as children, and she’d once challenged him to jump from the window after she’d done so. Ross smirked as he remembered how he broke his arm that day.

When he reached the turret, he went to the window where he could see the woods. His brother, Duncan, and sons were somewhere inside them, hunting. The path to the village could be seen more clearly this time of year, and he swore he spotted two riders on horses. No one had come to the castle to warn of intruders so they must be friendly. Ross strained to see better, then decided to grab Archie on his way outside, in case there was trouble.

Ross sprinted down the hall toward the foyer, out the door, and through the courtyard. Archie stood at the arched entryway, turning when he heard Ross approach. A smile spread across his face. “Our Alec and Aaron have returned, Ross.”

“Praise the Lord!” Relieved, Ross came to a stop beside Archie and waved his arm over his head. “Alec! Aaron!”

“Da!” Alec slipped from his horse as a stable hand came running. He spoke with the boy, ruffled his hair and smiled. “Take good care of her. She is a gift from my uncle.”

Aaron’s horse was taken away by the same boy. “Uncle Ross! Is it not grand? Uncle Gillanders gifted us each a horse.”

“’Tis verra kind of him,” Ross answered, knitting his brow at the extravagant gift. “I wish yer mothers were here to greet ye, but they have gone into the village.”

“We saw them, Da. Aaron and I stopped at Gordon and Gracie’s home, hoping we might find Cowan. Gracie says Cowan has been to London and back since we left. He has discovered there is some type of act which has been recently passed about becoming a lawyer.”

“Aye,” Ross said with a nod. “Tis called the Attorneys and Solicitors Act. Cowan has spoken in length about it. After the first of December 1730, no man shall practice as a Solicitor unless his name is on the Roll. He must also undertake an articled clerkship for a term of 5 years. He believes he has found someone who will help him.”

“Using Uncle Hiram’s name, I am sure,” Aaron said with a smile.

“We can speak of this later,” Ross answered, inwardly seething at the mention of Hiram Coward’s name.
