Advanced Trouble shooting techniques
You’ve followed along very well so far. We’ve discussed locating your MPOE and it’s meaning. We’ve talked about the differences a Protector and a SNI and why you want the ladder. We’ve discussed proper grounding techniques and your phone company’s responsibility and gone over some simple trouble shooting techniques.
Next I want to discuss some advanced trouble shooting and give you my opinion. Up until now the techniques have been things that you can do yourself. And basically the “isolation” technique of trouble shooting that you just learned can be continued with your inside wiring until you find the offending phone jack, cord or piece of Customer provided equipment.
Your goal here is going to be to make sure that your inside wire phone system is electrically neutral. You don’t want to have any shorts, grounds, crosses or opens to interfere with the optimal operation of your system. The Tool that I like to use to detect any of those problems is the “Tempo research sidekick 7B tester with Kickmeter” .
From inside your SNI, unplug the test lead from your inside wire. This isolates your inside wiring from the phone company‘s equipment. And as per our above outline the trouble we will be addressing will be a short. Using your testing you have isolated trouble to your inside wiring.
With this sidekick meter you can view the short and pull off every piece of equipment on your line until the short goes away. When short goes away then the last thing you pulled off got rid of the short. SIMPLE!!
Or at least it is to a trained professional and these days you should be able to find a former service technician who’s working on his or her own now to do the work for you at half the price.
So, while advanced trouble shooting is possible with the use of tools that I’ve mentioned, My advise is to find one of these professionals and hire them to do the work that the phone company wants to charge you an arm and a leg to do. You should be able to find one using social media like “Craig’s list”.
