A few hours later, I stepped out of my bedroom in a loose t-shirt and black leggings. I didn’t want any pressure for the night to be romantic. I wanted time to chill with a man I was interested in.

Despite that, I’d spent more time on my makeup than normal and had even twisted my hair into a presentable hairstyle. As he said he would, Reid texted around seven o’clock to report that his parents were getting ready to leave for bingo and would ride with my aunt. He would be over to see me soon after.

As I waited for Reid, I poured myself a glass of wine to calm my nerves. My heart skipped a beat at the knock on the door. I crossed the room, taking one last deep breath before I swung it open to reveal Reid leaning against the door frame with fire in his dark eyes. A tight black t-shirt accentuated toned muscles. Like me, he was casual in black sweats.

“Hello, beautiful.” He smiled as he stepped in, toeing off a pair of black sneakers before enveloping me in a warm embrace that smelled of charred wood and spice. “Feel like I haven’t seen you in forever, even though it’s only been a few hours.”

“Hey yourself,” I replied, breathless. “Come on in.”

“You good?” he asked, following me into the living room and settling into the couch next to me. “You seem… I mean, I don’t know you to know you seem weird, but—”

“But I seem weird?” I laughed. “It’s been an interesting afternoon. I will be okay, but unless you want to hear all about my impending divorce, let’s table that discussion.”

He shrugged, his brows raised. “I’ve been through a divorce, so I know it’s a rough time. People think you should be happy, but you actually feel like the biggest loser in the world that you couldn’t keep a partner interested in you.”

“You really know how to get to the heart of things. That’s exactly what I’m going through. Like…” I shifted to face him, tucking a leg up under me. “I wanted it. I wanted to file first. To stand my ground, to appear strong. I wanted to hurt him, I guess. But this afternoon, Adrian had me served.”

Reid’s eyes looked as though they were about to fall out of his face. “He…already? He filed. After…”

I nodded, rocking my head back and forth. “After the fistfight with his mistress’ husband, the viral video, the embarrassment…all of it. He filed.”

“He’s not even begging you to take him back. So now it’s like he’s rejecting you again?”

“You missed your calling in psychology,” I told him.

“Nah. I told you, I’ve been here before. I’ve been through therapy, questioning myself, healing. A lot of feelings. A lot of sowing my oats because I missed out on that, being married for so long.”

“Mmmmm,” I hummed, sliding closer to him on the couch. “And now we’ve come upon the reason for your visit.”

“I mean…yes.” Were he not so dark complected, he would be blushing.
