“I don’t think I got more than an hour’s worth of sleep during her entire visit,” Tressa told the slumbering husky. “So I think we all know that I’m going to be on that boat Thursday. The only question is, when do I let her know I’m caving in?”
Later that week, Tressa stood on the sailboat’s deck looking around for something helpful to do. It was late afternoon on Wednesday, July 3rd. Lindsey had explained everything in great detail. It was just too bad that it had all gone over her head. She’d nodded in agreement with everything Lindsey said, but hadn’t really been paying attention.
Now they were ready to cast off and Tressa was completely clueless as to what she should be doing.
“Okay, sweetie, are you ready?” Lindsey asked.
“Uh huh,” Tressa responded hesitantly.
“Right. The first thing you need to do is put on your life vest,” Lindsey told her.
“Okay.” Tressa was happy to start off with something that simple.
“Then I want you to stay out of my way,” Lindsey said firmly. “Can you do that?”
“But I, um…” Tressa protested.
“Don’t think I missed that faraway look in your eyes when I was explaining things to you,” Lindsey said. “I think we’ll both be a lot safer if you sit back and let me sail the boat up the coast. Getting from the harbor to the Charles River on a day like today is a real bitch. Things are even worse than usual because the Haborfest started yesterday, so I’d feel more comfortable if you just relaxed and enjoyed the scenery. If I need you to duck or move, I’ll let you know.”
“I remember about ducking when you mention the boom thingies,” Tressa said proudly, peering down at their tiny quarters.
“Good.” Lindsey sighed with relief.
Tressa enjoyed the pleasant sail to the Esplanade. Of course, all she did was sunbathe and move whenever Lindsey told her to. So far, she was enjoying the trip immensely. She looked over the peaceful waters, already filled with other boats anchoring for the night. “This is a great spot,” Tressa complimented Lindsey, who was busy tying the sail down. “We’re close enough to see the performance and aren’t overcrowded by other boaters.”
“Not yet,” Lindsey said, looking up at the sky. “More will arrive, but we can always hope.”
“It was nice of your brother to lend you his boat.”
“The poor guy doesn’t get to use it as often now that the new baby’s on the way,” Lindsey said. She seemed distracted.
Not for the first time, Tressa suspected there might be more to this sailing trip than her lover was letting on. Lindsey was normally a talkative person, but she’d grown strangely silent since they’d set sail. Tressa had assumed she was preoccupied with running the boat. Now, she wasn’t so sure.
Tressa looked around. She’d just had a sudden revelation. Here she was, stuck on this sailboat until they docked back at the pier they’d left from. She cast a suspicious glance at her lover. “I’m going to get us some food and wine,” Lindsey said.
