GREEK PRESENCE

About 600 BCE, the Phoenicians controlled the North African coast and the west and north of Sicily. Greece was in control of southern Italy and the eastern and northeastern shores of Sicily. That there were no hostilities between the two powers seems to indicate that they had entered into some kind of agreement for peaceful coexistence. As Malta was part of the Phoenician area of domination, it was spared any Greek attempts to change the status. However, there is evidence of trade with Greece, and there are even some Greek temple building ruins.
