KEYSTUT (ALSO KESTUTIS) (1300?–1382)

Grand duke of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL), son of Hedymin, brother of Alherd, and father of Vitaut. With Alherd, he coruled the GDL, being in charge of the western part of the duchy while Alherd was busy aggrandizing the realm in the east. Together, they defeated the army of the Teutonic Order (1370). In 1381, Keystut struggled with Alherd’s son Yahaila for power and was treacherously killed by the latter’s co-conspirators in 1382.

KHADKEVICH, YAN KARAL (1560–1621)

Statesman, hetman, and one of the most successful military commanders in the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL). Born to an old magnate family that played an important role in the history and politics of the GDL, he received his education at the University of Vilnia and at a Jesuit academy in Bavaria. During the war between the Commonwealth and Sweden of 1600–1629, his often outnumbered army scored numerous victories against the Swedish troops. He is also famous for leading Commonwealth armies in wars against Russia in 1611–1612 and 1617–1618. In 1620–1621, the Commonwealth troops under his command, allied with Ukrainian Cossacks, repulsed the invasion of Eastern Europe by the 150,000-troop army of Turkish sultan Osman near the Dniester River in present-day Moldova.
