Rain

“No!” I cried sharply, pitching myself toward the railing. I didn’t need a bird’s-eye seat to know Zadok had taken a direct hit. As one of the guards yanked me back, I screamed obscenities. I had the distinct feeling the useless prince had cheated. When Zadok fell to his knees, I realized I was hyperventilating. I didn’t even know the alien beast, at least not in the traditional way, yet I was horrified that he might die.

Did I care about him or just his level of protection?

I wasn’t certain. Everything was muddled at this point, but the ache in my stomach was increasing as the crowd continued to scream how happy they were. Zadok remained on the floor on his knees, holding his chest.

“Get up. Get up! Fight him!” I didn’t realize I was also yelling at the top of my lungs until several angry Mazians turned and glared at me. I noticed one of them calling for a different guard. Uh-oh. When he started to come for me, the second guard stopped him, issuing harsh words in their language. At least the asshole backed down.

The entire arena was alive with energy. It was obvious they were all encouraging the prince to finish the fight. I couldn’t breathe, my throat completely closed off as I tried to get a better look, managing to notice the prince was sauntering over, acting as if he had all the time in the world. My God, Zadok was right. He was pompous, completely arrogant. I took several shallow breaths, trying to will the man who’d saved my life twice to get the hell up. He was stronger than that, much bigger than the illustrious prince.

“Get up. Get up.”

When the prince lifted his spear over his head, I couldn’t take it any longer, managing to break free from the beast holding me. I shoved my way through the rowdy crowd, making it to the railing. Then I bellowed as loud as I possibly could.

“Zadok!”

There was no doubt he heard me.

As well as just about everyone else, including the prince. As one of the guards tried to rip me away from the railing, I kicked out, making enough of a connection it bought me a few precious seconds. The prince threw his gaze in my direction, a huge smile crossing his face. I couldn’t seem to stop shivering.

Zadok lifted his head and almost immediately, he held his spear away from his head, catching the prince’s before it came down. Then he jerked to his feet, swinging right and left. Within seconds, he’d issued several brutal blows, the prince tumbling backward with every savage strike.

And the brute who’d become my savior refused to back down, coming at the prince with everything he had. The prince managed to get to his feet, swinging the spear from one hand to the other then jamming it into Zadok’s chest.

Zadok roared.

The crowd cheered.

I moaned loud enough several of the horrible creatures around me inched closer, as if they were going to toss me into the arena.
