Chapter Sixteen

Sergei loved many things about modern life. Particularly modern American life. But after fifteen minutes too long in the frozen foods section of the nearest grocer and Kir offering his opinions on which ice cream to select, Sergei had decided that Ben & Jerry’s had officially taken things too far.

The growl of his BMW’s engine as he pulled into the driveway more quickly than was wise matched his unspoken frustration.

If Kir had an issue with his aggressive driving, he didn’t show it. Just casually unbuckled his seat belt before Sergei got the car in Park and dryly offered, “I still think you should have gone with Cherry Garcia.”

“She didn’t say anything about fruit. She said cookie dough, chocolate syrup and caramel.”

Kir grunted as they both got out of the car. “It has fudge in it.”

“Not enough.” Sergei rounded the front of the car and angled toward the carriage house, the plastic sack full of three different pints of ice cream dangling from his fist. “I want regular check-ins with Mikey and Daniel. Evette is uncomfortable with the boys Emerson is with. Until they prove themselves, they are not to be trusted.”

From the trajectory of Kir’s voice behind him, he still hadn’t budged from the passenger’s side of the car. “Where are you going?”

“I have ice cream and a woman relaxing in a hot bath.” He glanced over his shoulder. “Where do you think I’m going?”

Kir chuckled and shook his head. “You’re whipped.”

Perhaps he was. God knew he had no patience where Evette was concerned. Only a hunger that had grown steadily out of control since that night in the alley. As if her touch—her kiss and her scent—had infected him with an unquenchable lust. A pleasure that left the rest of the world in boring shades of black, white and gray when she wasn’t beside him. He paused at the door and locked eyes with Kir. “Watch Emerson.”

All humor fled his friend’s face. Kir had seen firsthand the bloodshed Sergei was capable of when someone dared to cross him and, companionable razzing aside, both of his avtoritets knew what Evette and Emerson meant to him. Knew what fury any harm to either of them would ignite.

Kir nodded. “He will be safe.”

It was all the reassurance Sergei needed. A handful of steps later, he was in Evette’s kitchen and unloading his purchases in the freezer.

Upstairs, all was quiet. So much so, he wondered if perhaps she’d snuck out while he’d been at the store. But then, if she’d done so, one of his men would have notified him.

He shucked his suit jacket, tossed it onto the kitchen table and quietly stole up the stairs. The master bedroom was empty, but the clothes Evette had been wearing were neatly folded on the flannel chair in the corner and the door to the master bathroom was closed. While the wide window on the far wall was high enough no one could directly see inside, the blinds were still tilted so the sunlight would fill the room during the day.
