Chapter Four:

The rest of the day went by with the two young men working on the murder case. Time seemed to fly by for Eli when he was with Stanley. They had lunch at the station and Eli went through more files. He even went through old records of all the animals that were present in the woods. Stanley had assured him he had already gone through them but Eli wanted to check them out himself. The sun was about to set when Stanley decided that Eli should call it a day and that he would drop him off at the cabin.

“Sounds good to me,” Eli nodded as he closed the file he was reading. It was about a person reporting seeing a wolf in the woods ten years ago. Other than that single man’s report, there hadn’t been any more similar instances.

Before Stanley could lead Eli out of the office, Stanley’s cell phone rang. “Hello! What is it, Patterson?”

Eli looked as Stanley’s expression became serious. “Yes, I’ll come over right away!”

“What happened?” Eli asked as Stanley hung up.

“Patterson just called. There’s been a report about a man seeing a wolf on the outskirts of the county and shooting it down. There’s a chance it could be the wild animal we were looking for.”

Eli didn’t say anything about how a wild animal still didn’t explain the fact that no one actually broke in to kill the three victims. An animal would have left behind obvious clues. “I have to go right now,” said Stanley. He sounded happy and relieved. He planted a kiss on Eli’s lips. “I’ll see you at the cabin as soon as I’m free,” he added, “unless you want to come with me?”

“No, it’s alright,” Eli smiled back. “I’ll see you at the cabin in a while.” There were a lot of things that didn’t make sense to Eli, but he didn’t want to become an annoyance to Stanley. If he thought the wolf was really responsible for the killings, then Eli’s work was done here. He would have to go back to the cabin, pack his bag, and go home as soon as possible.

Eli watched Stanley get into his car and drive away. He let out a sigh and walked out of the station. The sun had set and cold air blew around him. He didn’t see anyone as he walked towards the cabin except two or three people who were hurrying home. “Young man, you should be at home by now,” an old man called from his front door as Eli walked by.

“Yes, thank you,” Eli smiled at him. The old man hurriedly closed his front door. I guess he recognized who I was? Eli thought as he started to jog. He would reach the cabin in a few more minutes. He looked back but didn’t stop. Was his mind playing tricks on him again? He told himself not to think about it and started to jog faster. He wished he had a gun with him but he wasn’t allowed to carry one yet.
