CHAPTER 26
Assistance
The estate manager was gone. Eliza didnât know what that meant, but the fact that the man in charge of seeing to the estate concerns in their absence was suddenly gone was not like to be good news. If heâd left of his own accord, there was trouble afoot, and if he hadnât, then that was a different sort of trouble.
But she was exhausted, and judging by the look on Matthewâs face, her husband was similarly tired. After four days in the carriage, it was only right that they should be tired, but the siren song of a puzzle was calling for her and she wasnât certain if she was going to be able to sleep.
In the end, she didnât have a choice. Matthew took her to bed and exhausted her over and above what she had already been feeling. Truth be told, she didnât mind it in the least, and as she drifted off to sleep, held tightly and warm, she could only smile to herself.
The next day, Eliza was up with the maids. She needed a bath, a clean gown and some breakfast, and then she was going to tackle whatever mess was waiting for them. Butlers were unflappable sorts and Grantham had looked rattled in the extreme, so whatever had happened to make the estate manager flee was not like to be pleasant.
She left Matthew sleeping and went to her dressing room, where she startled one of the young maids who was putting away her gowns. The young woman jumped back, eyes wide. âOh forgive me, my Lady, I was just putting your things away."
âNothing to forgive,â Eliza said gently. âWould it be possible to have a bath brought?â
âRight away,â the young woman practically ran from the room and Eliza wondered if she should have been gentler. She hadnât meant to frighten anyone, but she did truly need a bath. The combination of four days in the carriage and her husband taking her relentlessly the night before meant that she felt rather sticky.
The bathing tub was brought up about a quarter of an hour later, followed by a succession of footmen with jugs of hot water to fill it with. She was used to cold baths, tepid at most, so a hot bath still felt like the most luxurious thing. It was very early, so she took her time bathing and washing up before she just allowed herself to sit in the water for a few minutes and think.
She should ask the housekeeper if she could spare one of her staff to act as Elizaâs personal maid. Failing that, if she had any recommendations for a ladiesâ maid. She was fairly proficient at getting into and out of her clothing, but it would be a great deal simpler if she had a second set of hands.
Especially now that her clothing was a great deal more elaborate. And pesky.
She dried and dressed, knowing that she was ever so slightly crooked, but sheâd done the best that she could.
