They arrived at Ethan’s office later in the afternoon. Jack had no trouble getting in. There was no reason for anyone to think he wasn’t himself, which he was. The entire thing made his head spin when he thought about it.

He saw a couple of people stare at Victoria as they passed by. He wasn’t surprised at all. She was beautiful; she intrigued him. When she kissed him, he had felt something that made him kiss her back. That last thought alarmed him, but he put all that away. He had to concentrate on the conversation he was about to have with his best friend about his long-lost psychotic twin brother.

He walked into Ethan’s office. He was filled with so much joy to see his friend; he ran up to him and hugged him, laughing loudly.

Ethan was a bit confused. ‘What’s going on, Jack? I saw you just a couple of hours ago.’

Jack released Ethan. ‘He was here?’

He turned back to look at Victoria, who had come in after him and was closing the blinds around the room.

‘Hey, what are you doing?’ Ethan asked. ‘Who was here? Jack, who is this?’

‘This is Victoria,’ he answered.

‘What’s she doing here? Why is she closing my blinds?’

‘I have something I need to tell you, Ethan, and I need you to listen. Even more, I need you to believe me.’

‘What is this, Jack? You were supposed to go back home to Mote. Why are you back here?’

‘Why was he here? What did he say?’

‘What did who say?’ Ethan snapped. ‘You were just here. You know what we talked about.’

‘It wasn’t me!’ Jack shouted.

Victoria ran up to him, holding his arm. ‘Calm down, Jack, we don’t want to cause a scene. If he knows we came here, it’s over.’

He took in a deep breath. ‘Ethan, do you remember, I told you about the man that came to the apartment claiming to be my brother? Well, for starters, he was right. He is my brother, and he’s on some sort of blind revenge mission to destroy my life.’

‘What? Jack, you need to explain this—what are you saying?’

‘That man that was here today wasn’t me. You must have noticed something, anything, come on! You’re my best friend, how can you not know when someone impersonates me?’

‘How do I know you’re not the crazy one?’

Jack sighed. This was going to take longer than he had hoped, but he was determined. If he could not convince Ethan, then he had no hope of convincing Mote or Ara, so he kept on. He described in detail as much as he remembered from the night of the incident. He went as far back as the first time he met Jay and everything he said to him. He told him Jay’s story about his parents, their parents. He said everything Victoria had told him about Jay and his plan for vengeance that had brewed in him for a long time.

When he was done, he could see that Ethan was even more confused than when he’d begun.
