Chapter Five: Emma
Ten minutes later I was in Samâs office, having a lovely melt-down. âI must have been mad,â I said to him. âI'm totally unqualified!â
He was digging out a file listing PA duties. âYou have common sense, and you learn fast. You'll be fine.â
âI have a son at home! Benâs only seven.â
âCurtis works regular hours. This doesn't change a thing.â
âBut Sam, Iâm not at all what he thinks!â
âHe's happy with your work, and that's all that matters.â
âButâ!â
âLook, Emma,â Samâs voice was gentle. âI think you need the money?â
âBenâs dyslexic,â I whispered. âHeâs just been diagnosed.â
âThen this is a gift from heaven,â Sam said firmly.
He refused to listen to any more protests, and when I saw the salary bump, I shut up. It would net me a laptop, and the tutorial sessions were within reach.
So I floated home and prepared myself for a heart-to-heart with Ben. Ups and downs, right? The promotion was giving me a lovely kick, but I had to break the news to Ben that heâd been diagnosed dyslexic.
Iâd been worried ever since the conference with Miss Maddy, so Iâd been trying to figure out what to say to him should the worst happen. Now it had come, and I was word perfect.
To make it as easy as possible, I presented Ben with my beautifully prepared and sensitive explanation over a supper of bangers, mash, and mushy peas, one of his favourite meals.
We can do this. Weâre going to be fine.
I was pep-talking at pro level
âIâm so proud of you, darling.â My voice was shaky from pure nerves. âYou work so hard, but I know you really struggle with reading sometimes.â
âSo Iâm dyslexic?â Ben was completely calm.
âErm, right.â I just stared at him, totally taken aback. âHow did you know about that?â
Ben rolled his eyes. âMu-um!â
âSo my telling you that it was just a special quiz didnât fool you?â
âPffft!â Ben laughed.
Kids, right? Theyâre so much smarter than we give them credit for. I found myself actually shaking with relief. âDo you know what dyslexia is, love?â
âIt means your brainâs wired differently,â Ben responded instantly. âSitiâs dyslexic, and soâs Rupert. Marion isnât, but her mum says she is because it means you get extra time in exams. Sheâs pushy, Marionâs mum.â
Okay, so my seven-year-old son was more aware of parenting politics than me. âI had no idea you got extra time,â I told him.
âThey forgive you bad handwriting and spelling, too,â Ben grinned. âMarion is super lazy, so sheâll need all the help she can get.â
âGood lord. Really?â
âYes, but it means I get special homework,â Ben said. âExtra,â he explained.
âIâm afraid thatâs true. But Iâll help.â
And then, very cunningly, he grinned at me. âDo I get extra ice cream, too?â
I had to laugh. âDefinitely, and on the days we go to tutoring, you get to pick a takeaway supper.â
Ben speared a sausage with his fork, saying casually, âYouâre the best mummy, you know that, right?â
Kids are amazing, they really are. I had to blink rapidly, because I was watering again.
