Hailey

I let the day drag on and went ahead and started getting ready so I can get rid of Caleb once and for all. There are two different types of people who have money. Those that rub it in others’ faces and those who remain humble. I guess you can tell who is who. I never believed in that because it’s my parents with the money. I slipped on a really simple floral dress that sat in the middle of my thighs and just let my hair flow normally. I didn’t try very hard for obvious reasons. I couldn’t believe that I even agreed to this. I was entertaining it for whatever reason, I guess. I was startled with the door aggressively opening and Alyssa standing a few feet away with a cold expression on her face.

“Ever heard of knocking? It comes in handy.”

She stared at me, still with nothing behind those eyes, like she was ready to finally win. I don’t understand, but I was prepared. Or so I thought.

“Sorry, but I need to tell you something.”

Her arms folded across her chest and now the tension in the room got thicker.

“Tell me what? Can you please hurry, though? I have to leave soon.”

I heard her exhale, and I looked up from my phone and the look on her face had changed.

“Leave where?” She asked.

“On a date with Luna’s cousin, but anyways, he won’t stop bugging me unless I give him one date.”

There was no chance that I could read her. The wheels were turning and if I knew back then what I knew now. I’d tell myself I couldn’t trust her. I mean, how could I?

“Where are you guys going?”

“The theaters on main or something like that. Look, we will talk later. I really have to go now.”

I zoomed past her, hoping not to engage in any conversation anymore. Today has been a weird day as it is and the last thing I wanted was to deal with my little sister who wouldn’t care if I fell off the edge of the earth. I was sure I’ll come back and find exactly what she was up to. When I got to the theaters, he was there waiting for me. Caleb wasn’t a bad-looking guy. He had the Hawaiian look on him. If only his ego wasn’t the size of Texas, maybe I would be more willing to try this out.

“You look beautiful, Hailey.” He walked over and pulled me into an uncomfortable hug.

“Thanks. We should go inside before the movie starts.”

I went straight for the door so that I didn’t have to be on this date longer than I was. It hadn’t even been a few minutes and the knot in my stomach had tightened and I was feeling uncomfortable. When we walked in, I realized it was empty. Only people that were there looked to be the workers.

“Where is everyone?”

“Not here. I booked the theater for just the two of us.”

There it was. The not-so-humble rich guy who thinks he can buy my affection with his money.
