“A song?” Torra asked. She dipped her head low, trying to hide the fact that she was blushing. She was supposed to be keeping her distance from Camden, but why had he found her now, especially when she looked so awful after hauling sacks of grain around? His offer of help had been kind, but she just wanted him to go because being in his presence was too painful. However, he didn’t show any sign of leaving and seemed quite settled on the pile of sacks. She pressed her back against the beam, trying to anchor herself. Pain flared in her hands as she massaged them, but they also lingered with an echo of a pleasant tremble that had followed as her flesh had touched his.

“Aye, a song. I cannae get the one I hae already heard out of my head,” he said.

“I’m sorry.”

Camden laughed. “It’s naething tae be sorry for! I cannae count how many bards I hae heard play over the years here, and none of them hae been as good as ye. I want tae hear more.”

Torra thought there must be some kind of trick as nobody apart from Lara and Lyle had ever wanted to hear more, and their judgment wasn’t exactly the highest. At first, she was afraid it was some kind of trick, but he let the request linger.

“I’m afraid I dinnae know many songs,” she said quietly.

“I’m sure ye know enough tae keep me entertained.” Camden placed his hands in his lap and seemed ready to sit there for a long time.

“I’m nae tae good in front of people,” she said, trying to excuse any bad performance before she had even begun. She cleared her throat and knew that she couldn’t deny the laird a performance that he requested, although she wished that he had changed his mind. She thought about all the songs she knew and then sang one that she had learned a long time ago. It was about a mother whose son went off to sea, and every day she stayed by the shore, watching the horizon in the hope that he would return, but he never did. It had always struck a chord with Torra’s heart. Although the acoustics weren’t perfect in the storehouse, her voice was rich with emotion. At first, her voice faltered. She couldn’t control her breathing because she was aware of Camden’s presence. But then she closed her eyes and let the song fill her soul, and then all of the tension eased away. She surrendered to the melody and felt it lift her heart. She imagined this is what floating away was like…utterly magical.

When she finished, the last note reverberated in the air before it faded into silence. She took a deep breath and allowed the emotion to flow through her along with the music, as though she was letting everything in her heart out. She felt a tingle in her skin, as she always did when she sang a powerful song, and came back down to Earth.
