Mark and Charlotte stood before the minister in the backyard of the ranch and said their vows with Allie and Levi as their witnesses and the children watching as well. Mark hated how tense and pale Charlotte looked as she repeated her vows. Fortunately the minister kept the ceremony brief and he soon announced them husband and wife. He pressed a quick kiss to her lips before they turned to look at his family.

“Congratulations, you two,” Levi said, hugging him and then Charlotte.

“Welcome to the family, Charlotte,” Allie said, hugging her friend.

“Thank you, Allie,” Charlotte said, but her smile looked forced and Mark began to worry that she wasn’t feeling well.

“Ew!” Lydia shrieked, coming running over to Mark and Charlotte.

“What is it?” Mark asked, lifting her into his arms.

“Aaron ate a worm!” Lydia said, her expression showing her disgust.

“Aaron!” Allie said, turning to her son.

“Alex dared me to,” Aaron put in, looking a little green.

“I didn’t think he’d really do it,” Alex said seriously.

“Levi-” Allie turned to her husband.

“Boys will be boys, Al,” Levi said with a chuckle.

“Is that going to make him sick?” she asked worriedly.

“No, he’ll be fine,” Levi answered reassuringly.

“Excuse me,” Charlotte said, rushing into the trees.

“Mama’s sick a lot,” Lydia said with a frown.

“I know,” Mark said, kissing her little cheek. “Why don’t you go play? I’m goin’ to go check on her, okay?”

Lydia nodded her agreement as he set her on her feet, and she ran off to play with Alex and Aaron.

“Don’t go too far, it’s almost time for supper!” Allie called after them.

Mark slowly approached where Charlotte was leaned against a tree, looking very pale. “Are you all right?” he asked in concern.

“I’m fine,” Charlotte answered quietly.

“You’re not supposed to lie to your husband,” he teased, watching her in concern.

Charlotte’s face flushed slightly, “I’m sorry.”

“I was teasing you, sweetheart. I hope you would tell me if you are truly ill,” he said seriously.

“I would, it’s just the morning sickness getting to me is all,” Charlotte admitted quietly.

“Come on,” he said, holding his hand out to her. “Let’s get you back to the house so you can sit down.”

Charlotte put her hand in his, “I hope you don’t regret marrying me,” she said quietly as they started back toward the house. “I know you were kind of forced into it.”

He stopped walking, “Charlotte, look at me.”

She slowly obeyed, and he hated seeing the misery in her beautiful blue eyes. “I was not forced into marrying you. I have known for a while that I wanted to marry you, but you needed time and I was happy to wait for you. Secondly, I am not going to regret marrying you. I love you, Charlotte.”

Tears filled her eyes, “I love you too, Mark.”

He wrapped his arms around her and just held her close, kissing the top of her head. Sending up a silent prayer for help, he knew that they were going to need God’s help to get through the coming days and weeks ahead.
