Chapter Seventeen

“Wow, this is beautiful, but are you really sure it’s safe to be out here in the storm?” Cassie was in awe of the lightning streaking across the now pitch-black sky, the electric forks spreading out in startling flashes of purple and orange. Dinner had been wonderful, though neither Gage nor Deryc would stop eating until both of the tarts she had made were finished—and they’d insisted she help them. Now she had a full belly and two gorgeous specimens to keep her company, and a strange feeling she hadn’t experienced in forever blossomed in her chest.

Happiness. Had it truly been so long since she’d been happy just enjoying spending time with a man—or men in this case?

Cassie already knew the answer to that question. It was a startling realization that eight years had passed since her fiancé’s death, and over that time, she’d somehow simply resigned herself to being alone for the rest of her life. The reasons for not dating, in the beginning, might be different than the excuses she’d told herself the last couple of years, but Cassie could finally admit to herself what was honestly behind all of it. The fear of loving someone more than your next breath, and the possibility of losing them in an instant, like she had Peter? That kind of fear had stopped her from living her life.

Not this gal. At least, not anymore. If I can stay sane after everything that’s happened the past year, then surely, I have the courage to look for love again … don’t I?

“Of course, we would never put you in danger, Cassie.” Gage laced his fingers through hers and led her towards the lounge furniture.

“Our home environmental shields will keep out any rain and most of the wind, and Ilya is well equipped with protection towers which draw any lightning towards them, away from other structures. The energy collected from such storms can provide the entire island with power for many, many months,” Deryc explained as he offered his hand to help her onto the huge lounger.

Cassie could still smell the difference in the air around them that indicated the storm's arrival. It was oddly comforting to her, that even on another planet, nature still remained constant in some things. She used to love curling up to watch storms back home—of course, she’d never had such delicious company for the event before. Her mind kept wandering back to the scene last night on these very chairs. Never in her wildest fantasies could she have imagined how sexy it would be to watch two men make love, and it was clear that these two loved each other with everything in them. The way they had savored each other’s touch had made Cassie’s heart ache with a longing to feel that connected to another person. It had been beautiful … and hot as hell.

Her body warmed as the men snuggled in on each side of her and Gage covered their legs with a soft blanket.

“What would you like to drink, Cassie?” Deryc asked.
