Chapter Nine
"Sorry about my mom." Luca felt like he'd been apologizing all evening, but between his own faux pas of coming out in front of everyone without a shirt on and his mother's obvious matchmaking attempts, there had been plenty to feel sorry about.
She'd just kicked them out on a moonlit walk so that she and Pam could clean up in peace. Never mind that Trudy and Ted were still in the house with them.
"I like her," Ally said. Just the right thing, the way she always did.
Luca glanced over at the beautiful woman walking beside him and could see why his mom was doing what she was. If he was ever going to settle down … but why would she do this when she knew Luca's resolution. No woman would ever find her way to his heart again. Especially a woman like Ally. She was nearly perfect, and that would be his final undoing. No, friendship was as far as they could go. Even his mother's attempts wouldn't melt his resolve.
"I do too. Most of the time."
Ally laughed.
"Are you doing okay?" Luca asked, and Ally nodded slowly. He wasn't sure he should bring up the incident that had happened during dinner that had shaken Ally and her mother up pretty badly.
Laura had asked Ally where she was working, and Ted had answered for her that she worked for a travel magazine in Los Angeles and was just home for the summer before her job started. Even after Ally corrected him, telling him she'd moved home, Ted had brushed it off and reiterated that Ally would be leaving them soon. Ally's face had gone white before she continued on with the conversation, saying she'd recently graduated from MICA. And Ted had agreed with that enthusiastically. But Luca hadn't missed the way Ally had kept glancing at her father with her eyes full of worry.
"He wasn't even talking about the most recent plan before my move home. I'd been planning on coming home for the summer, but then my job changed and needed me earlier. Anyway, it felt like I’d lost him to a few months back and it ..." Ally let her voice trail off.
"Scared you?" Luca ventured when Ally didn't speak again.
She nodded. "We really are going to lose him," she whispered.
Luca knew exactly what she was feeling. He put his arm around her shoulders as their toes hit the sand. Ally nestled into him immediately, and he knew she’d been craving the contact. If he was honest with himself, he had been too.
"And it just stinks that we don't know when it's going to happen. I think if I knew I had another three months or three weeks, if I could have a countdown maybe, it would make it easier."
She paused and then looked up at Luca. "Or it might not."
Luca understood that too. He'd often contemplated what would make this sickness easier, and so far, he’d come up with nothing. Except for a reverse diagnosis.
"It's a perfect night for surfing," Luca said as he turned his attention to the water.
