Theodore looked at his brothers, “We need to do something about Connor, fast. He’s on a path of self-destruction, and he can’t even see it.”

Justin sighed, “He’s such a good person but he has been punishing himself for years. I mean it’s like his pain is what drives him. He hasn’t let anything go.”

Darryl chipped in, “I think maybe he knows he’s not being very good to himself but I don’t think he cares.”

Jonathan flicked him a look, “You read his mind?”

Darryl scoffed, “Well, yeah, of course I did. He usually has his defenses up more than the rest of you, but when he’s pissed, it’s like throwing a pickle down a hallway. And he has been pissed a lot lately.”

The mayor turned to Theodore, “Whatever this thing is, you need to figure it out. The disappearances in particular. Nathaniel means well, but he clearly in over his head. He has no inkling that your sort even exists. And we need to keep it that way.”

Theodore exchanged glances with his brothers, “We all know what this means, right? Roy is going to try to pin all this on us. He has started feeding on humans again, which is exactly what the vampires did twenty years ago. You know what happened then. Once the town was in full blown panic mode, Atlas Corning, their soulless leader, pointed the finger straight at shifters, and the townspeople came out for blood.”

A quiet sadness fell over the room as they all remembered the loss they had suffered. Friends and families had been burned at the stake before their young eyes, and they had been unable to do a thing about it. The vampires had convinced the humans that the shifters were the ones killing people and draining their blood.

The gullible humans had believed that the vampires were as human as they were and they had wiped out the shifters. Then, in a single night, vampires had descended, in a feeding frenzy that left half the town dead and the other half injured. Angel Springs had become a ghost town for at least fifteen years after that, with no life whatsoever in the town until the Exotic Pack had made their way back and started to gradually convince humans to move in too.

Now, it was happening all over again.

“We’re not our parents,” Theodore said in that soft silky tone that said he was beyond pissed. “We won’t roll over and play dead for Roy. If he wants a battle, then a fucking battle is what he’s going to get.”

Justin nodded, “We have resources now that out parents didn’t have.”

“And we have Tailan,” Jonathan pointed out.

The mayor asked, “Can the mineral be morphed into some sort of weapon then?”

The men exchanged glances, and then Theodore answered, “We don’t know yet, Stephen. But Jessica’s been researching the potentials of the mineral. I trust her to find any advantage for us she can.”

With firm handshakes all around, Mayor Stephen Cutler left.
