It took a village to teach five-year-olds how to ride horses. That was what kept going through Kyndall’s mind as she watched the Calhoun family work together to give each of the five-year-olds a ride around the makeshift ring.

Each child had to be carefully lifted onto the horse and held onto as they rode around slowly. It was an impressive sight.

Kyndall had the easy job. She stood on the other side of the fence with the children, keeping them safely in place until it was their turn to ride. Then she would let one of them go and urge the returning kid to sit down. Getting them to stay still was the hardest part.

When an SUV pulled in next to all the trucks parked behind the school bus, Kyndall squinted in that direction. She couldn’t imagine who it could be. Four of the five brothers were working with the kids, and Jessalyn and Cate were at the home show. The door opened and out stepped none other than Joan. Dennis got out on the passenger side.

“Howdy!” Joan said as she drew closer.

The kids next to Kyndall looked up and smiled. They all quickly returned their attention to the scene in front of them. It would take a lot to pull their eyes off the horses for long.

“Hi,” Kyndall said because she could take her eyes off the horses. It was increasingly difficult to not look at Wes, though. He and Jake were taking turns riding with the kids, and the sight of him with his arms around a little one, protecting and safeguarding, broke her heart every time.

He would be such a good father, but he wouldn’t be her child’s father. He’d made it clear that he was in no way ready for a commitment. She’d been shot down before anything could have even started.

It was for the best, she knew. But that didn’t make it hurt less.

Joan walked around the group and came to stand to the left of Kyndall. Dennis, meanwhile, had gone to the fence and was talking to Shane about something.

“We have a surprise for the kids,” Joan said in a voice loud enough for only Kyndall to hear. “It’s at the lodge. When they’re finished here, get them ready for dinner, but don’t take them to the mess hall. Instead, go to the lodge.”

“A surprise,” Kyndall said. “Sounds interesting.

All she could think about right now was what she’d learned about the two brothers who were in the mess hall. They hadn’t broken the news to the rest of the family, so it was still a secret they had to keep. But she felt bad that Joan might not get as much warning when she, a complete stranger, had gotten a heads-up.

“Who rides next?” Dennis asked, turning to look at the kids.

Hands shot up in the air, prompting Kyndall to shake her head. “You’ve all had at least two turns around.”

“Caroline got three!” one of the boys pointed out.

Caroline was on the horse with Wes at that very moment, neither of them aware of the conversation happening over here.
