I was getting ready for my date with Ruth when someone banged on my apartment door. I opened it to see Mason, who pushed his way inside my apartment, throwing his hands in the air.
âIâm finished. Everythingâs a mess. What am I going to do?â He stomped through my living room into the kitchen and pulled open my refrigerator. âWhereâs the beer? I need a drink.â
I followed him into the kitchen. âSorry, I havenât had time to shop. Whatâs up?â I almost didnât dare ask because Mason made a big deal out of little things. Like the time his mother, my aunt, started using cottage cheese as a salad dressing when he preferred Thousand Island. âNowâs not the best time; Iâm going on a date.â
Mason grabbed a half-gallon of orange juice and began chugging it straight from the bottle. For a seemingly fastidious guy who worked out in a gym and wore all the right clothes, he had some annoying habits, especially when he was stressed. âWell, Iâm sorry to interrupt you, but you always have a date so itâs not all that important. That camera is like a babe magnet. Maybe I ought to take up photography.â He gulped more juice.
I took the bottle from him and set it on the counter. âThis girl is different.â
âYeah, yeah.â He waved his hand in dismissal. âBut Iâm your cousin. Thatâs more important, and Iâm in a crisis.â
I glanced at my phone. It was almost eight, and Ruth could text any minute. âThe studio took away your assigned parking space? No, thatâs not it. Maybe they stopped offering bagels at the shop you go to for breakfast?â
âOh, right. Now heâs a funny guy.â Mason glowered at me.
âWell, then, tell me already. Iâm in a hurry.â Maybe I should wear jeans instead of these black slacks. Iâd be more comfortable, and it was just a casual thing at her apartment. I didnât want to overdress.
Mason lowered himself to a bar stool at the mini center island that doubled as my dining table. âItâs Sylvia. She quit.â
That was news. Mason had produced several shows over the ten years heâd been in the business, but Turn Up the Heat was decidedly his most successful venture yet.
âI guess youâre moving to Australia then?â
Ignoring me, he jumped up and started pacing. âIt wasnât even because one of the cameramen refused to eat her sushi. That just put her in a bad enough mood so when the word came down that the station denied the time change sheâs been pushing for the past year, she just quit.â
âAre you sure?â I sat down on a stool with an internal sigh. This was obviously not something I could solve in a few minutes.
âWell, the fact that she said âI quitâ was a big clue. And she cleaned out her dressing room.â He plopped down again on the stool next to me, letting his head fall into his hands.
âSheâll probably change her mind. Sheâs threatened to quit before.â
âSheâs never cleaned out her dressing room.
