Chapter Thirteen

Kai

She’d lied.

A sound of pain mixed with grief and rage escaped my throat as I slumped against the glass wall. My body curled in on itself, but my scales offered no protection from the agony I felt over my soulmate’s lie. No, the truth hurt more than the lie. I’d been happy with the lie. Content to think Namish’s spirit could be reunited with his ancestors once we escaped this gods-forsaken planet. But everything had changed in an instant, and I was caught off guard.

Becca scrambled to her feet after I’d unceremoniously dropped her to the floor, and I could feel her fear wash over me like a wave as she hurried toward the door. We were connected now. What she felt, I felt.

“Wait,” I said through gritted teeth, holding up a hand to stop her. “Just… wait. I won’t hurt you.”

She froze with one hand on the door. Her eyes were wide, and her whole body trembled. I wanted to move closer to her, to take her back into my arms, but I didn’t want to do anything that scared her further. I’m sorry. I never meant to hurt. I promise I didn’t mean to.”

Seeing her like that, huddled against the door and falling apart, blaming herself and offering her apology so sincerely… it tore me up inside. I still hated the lie, but my feelings for my mate were stronger. I knew her heart, and I could feel her suffering. I believed that she was truly sorry, and I forgave her before the words left my mouth.

“I forgive you,” I said. In an instant, I closed the space between us, wrapping myself around her and holding her close as she laid her beautiful head against my chest. “I don’t want you to feel like you ever need to lie to me again. The truth will always be better. You’re my mate now, and we can get through anything together.” I tipped my head to the side so I could look into her pretty blue eyes. “See? I can feel your heart beating next to mine. This closeness… this is how we are meant to be. Side by side. Heart to heart. Forever.”

“Forever,” she repeated, nodding as a small smile spread across her soft, delicate features. “I like the sound of that.”

I liked the sound of it, too. A primal, possessive need rose inside me, making me want to strip my mate’s clothing off and claim her properly right there in my cell. But no. I had to stay strong. I
