When we arrived at the portal, Caleb seemed almost grateful when I set him down. He grinned as he took my hand. "I'm pretty sure that entire trip took less than three minutes at best, but at the same time my brain feels like I just took a long journey and I'm relieved to have my feet on the ground again. Is that weird?"
"If you ask me, it's probably mental more than anything. I have to admit though, I've often felt the same way after a dreamscape that takes place in a faraway land." We both turned to see Sammy speaking as he and his brothers approached, along with the rest of their group.
They all started to form a circle around us where we stood a meter or so from the portal. Easton had a more formal air about him than he had previously when I had seen him. He stepped forward while the shifters took each other's hands and closed the wide circle that encapsulated the three of us and the portal.
Easton looked back and forth between me and Caleb for a moment before speaking. "Does the fact that the two of you are standing here suggest that you have both decided to accept our offer? And if so, does this mean that you are willing to trade your soul for the boon of immortality, Caleb?"
Caleb started to accept, when one of the shiftersâa small omega who we had not met yetâreleased the hands he was holding and stepped forward, sniffing the air. "I'm sorry, but I feel like I should interrupt real quick. My name is Aaron, and I am a healer. Before you accept, I need to ask if you know that you're pregnant, and are effectively deciding for both of you? If you make this choice, you're also sealing the fate of your pup to not have a human soul but rather to live as an immortal Fae. I can't heal you since that's not your fate, but I could probably extend your life long enough to give birth, if Tobias would rather stay here. I don't want to ruin your plans, but I feel like I need to make the offer."
My heart raced as I heard those words, while my stomach flipped and did funny things. Should we stay? Was it fair to rob our child of the human experience? But on the other hand, if we stayed then we would be certainly robbing him of one of his parents. And did I really want to stay here? Cursed to be ever alone after my mate would eventually die, leaving me a world away from my own family who would dearly love to know my child? I was vaguely aware of my nerves disrupting the heartsong. The strained notes were making the melody discordant until Caleb squeezed my hand with a soft smile, instantly calming me before he turned to answer Aaron.
"No, but thank you for telling me about the pup. Staying here would be selfish, and being pregnant gives me all the more reason to cross realms.
