Most of the paranormal activity at The Hop Poles falls into the poltergeist category. In the late 1990s a news crew, who had been permitted to spend the night in the cellar, fled in terror after some beer barrels started to roll around corners towards them. On another occasion, another crew were filming an interview with the landlord when a technician pointed out that the monitor they were watching wasn’t actually plugged in. A metal ice scoop has been seen to fly on many occasions across the cellar, glasses have been thrown 6–8ft behind the bar, stirrers have jumped out of their glasses and plugs are habitually pulled out of their sockets – all by unseen hands. Similar activity has occurred upstairs too. According to a local newspaper article from the mid-1990s a succession of barmaids who had rooms above the pub soon chose to live elsewhere because of the disturbances. The Hop Poles’ ghost continues to draw interest. Most recently, on Halloween 2012, a media production company hosted a ticketed ghost-hunting event in search of ‘George’.
