BREWERY AVENUE AND BREWERY GULCH

RED-LIGHT DISTRICT AND BREWERY GULCH HISTORY

Brewery Gulch is located where Main Street turns into Naco Road. At this location, the Dubacher brothers opened a drinkery. They built the Mountain Brewery, which became a popular place and where not only local miners hang out, but travelers also took a rest and had a cold drink. This is where Brewery Gulch derived its name and where the brothers’ nephew Joseph Muheim first started to work in Bisbee, as a bartender.

Their saloon was named the “best equipped establishment of its kind in the territory of Arizona.” Among the infamous rascals who patronized the brewery were Burt Alvord, Billy Stiles and a woman named “Black Jack.”

Brewery Gulch grew along with the rest of the mining community, but it filled its spaces with more lively businesses than those over on Main Street. Brewery Gulch was packed with approximately forty-seven saloons at one time. The number of actual saloons varies in historical documents.

In Upper Brewery Gulch there was another sort of business expanding and gaining momentum. This area was called the “Red-light District.” Soon after Bisbee was named, city officials tried to control prostitution without prohibiting it.

In 1892, the Board of Supervisors of Cochise County adopted a law that confined all brothels to a designated area of South Main Street and west of OK Street. Then, in 1897, to place it at a distance from homes of families and respectable wives, mothers and children, the Red-Light District was designated to Upper Brewery Gulch and later extended to a part of Zacatecas Canyon.
