Naturally, the constant losses infuriated al-Mahdi, and the caliph prepared a new expedition to try to claim Byzantine territory. As a show of force and to no doubt demonstrate Arab superiority, al-Mahdi ensured his new army was the largest ever sent in the last century, consisting of over 95,000 trained soldiers. Although historians dispute the accuracy of this number, if it’s accurate, it meant the size of the expedition would have been double the total number of troops protecting Byzantine territory in Asia Minor. The expedition would cost the Abbasid administration 1,600,000 nomismata, which was the equivalent of the Byzantine Empire’s annual income. Al-Mahdi placed his son Al-Rashid in charge by name, but al-Rashid was accompanied by more experienced officers and commanders to ensure the success of the invasion.[33]
