CHAPTER SEVEN

HALF AN HOUR later Chad pulled into his driveway and stopped the SUV behind Izzy’s car.

Their relationship had grown to something he didn’t want to define. He should leave her alone, couldn’t make promises about tomorrow. Yet there was something between them, something he’d never had with another woman. No matter how hard he pushed it away, the desire to explore it remained. As undefined as it was, there was still a rightness to it. They fit. For right now at least.

Not wanting to scare Izzy away, he had to be careful, but he also didn’t want the evening to end. He had so few nights that were all to himself. Henry would return tomorrow. “Since there’s a nice breeze, why don’t we sit in the backyard for a while? I’ll get us both a drink.”

“That sounds nice. Why don’t you let me get the drinks since my kitchen is closer? Would you like iced tea or water or something stronger?”

To his immense pleasure, she’d agreed. He hadn’t been confident she would. “A cold beer?”

“I should be able to fill that order.” She headed toward her door.

Chad settled into the metal chair. Leaning his head back, he closed his eyes. He listened as Izzy open and closed her door. A few minutes later, her soft steps came toward him. He knew the moment she stood in front of him without looking because the scent that was hers alone filled the air. He smiled. What a lovely smell. Chad opened his eyes.

“I thought you might have gone to sleep.” She looked down on him.

“Nope. Just listening to the night sounds.” And for her. He found Izzy as peaceful as a quiet night. He reached for the beer bottle she held, taking a long swallow as Izzy settled into the empty chair beside his.

“It’s been a nice evening.” Her words were so soft he almost missed them. “I had fun at the ball game. I loved seeing the Capitol. Thanks for sharing that with me.”

Chad hadn’t felt this content in a long time. He wished it could stay that way. Izzy made his busy, stressful single-parent life easier by just being around. He would worry about tomorrow then. Right now, all he wanted to do was pull Izzy into his lap and kiss her senseless. Then take her to bed and love her to the point she was too weak to get out of bed.

He inhaled deeply and released it slowly. What was happening to him? Izzy. He didn’t say anything for a few minutes.

“What were you thinking?” Izzy asked.

Did he dare tell her? “Do you really want to know?”

She didn’t immediately answer as if she knew her response would change everything between them. “Yeah, I do.”

“I think there’s something special between us. I’m not sure what it is or where it can go, but I know it’s special enough that it would be a shame not to act on it.” Izzy didn’t say anything. His throat tightened. Had he misjudged the situation?

He glanced at Izzy.
