CHAPTER TEN

GABE HADN’T MEANT to share dessert with Kami, but watching her eat the sweets was more enjoyable than eating the carrot cake he’d ordered would have been. Not that she didn’t let him have a bite here and there.

“This is really good.”

“Better than your Death by Chocolate?”

Looking ecstatic, she nodded. “This could be Killed by Carrots.”

Gabe laughed. “I don’t think that’s going to catch on.”

“Probably not,” she admitted, her lips wrapping around the fork, her eyes closing as she slowly pulled the fork out.

When she opened her eyes, realized he was watching her and that what she was doing was affecting him, she winced. “Sorry. I keep forgetting.”

“Forgetting?”

“Nothing.”

“You really think I’m going to let you get away with that?”

She shrugged. “You can only make me tell what I’m willing to.”

He thought on her comment a moment. “The only thing you’re willing to tell me is nothing?”

“Maybe.”

“I never took you for a tease, Kami.”

“Yeah, yeah. I’ve been teasing you for months. It’s what you and I do. What we’ve always done. It’s safe and fun and, despite your momentary lapses, it’s probably all there should be between us.”

Elated at her “probably,” Gabe studied her, trying to decipher if she was serious or testing him, wanting him to correct her.

“My momentary lapses? Are you saying you didn’t have a lapse when you kissed me back?”

“Oh, I had a lapse, all right. A big one.”

“Meaning you regret having kissed me back?”

As if she was trying to keep them from spilling her secrets, her lips pressed tightly together.

Gabe smiled. He couldn’t help himself. She couldn’t admit that she’d enjoyed their kiss, but she couldn’t lie and say she regretted it, either.

Whatever her reasons were for not wanting to move into a more physical relationship, Kami wasn’t immune to the chemistry between them. Not by a long shot.

“Okay, you refuse to tell me if you regret kissing me. I can live with that. But what I really want to know,” he mused, picking up his fork and feeding her a piece of his carrot cake, “is when are you going to let me kiss you again?”

Kami choked on the cake. Coughing, she cleared her throat, took the glass of water Gabe offered, then coughed some more.

“Not exactly the reaction I was going for,” he said wryly, his lips twitching.

“I imagine not.” She took another drink of water and this time the cool liquid went down correctly. “Don’t do that.”

“Don’t do what?”

“Say things that catch me off guard.”

Gabe laughed. “That caught you off guard? You who always have a fast comeback for anything I say?”

“Yeah, well, I didn’t just then.”

“Apparently.”

She put her water glass down and pushed what was left of both cakes toward him. “I’m finished. You eat the rest.”

Gabe motioned for the waitress, asked for a box and the check.

“I can pay for mine.”

“You could, but you’re not,” he corrected. When she went to argue, he reminded her, “It’s my turn. You paid last time.”

“Actually, Jerry paid last time.”

“I imagine the television station reimbursed him.
