CHAPTER SEVEN

REBECCA DIDN’T REALLY have time to think about Nathaniel on Saturday—Jasmine had a swimming lesson and then a play date with her best friend from nursery, giving Rebecca a chance to blitz the house and catch up with laundry. But she did check that Saskia could babysit on Monday, and texted him to let him know that babysitting was fine.

Sunday morning was spent making Eton Mess and brownies, and then they headed off to her parents’ house.

But when she checked her phone on Sunday evening, there was a message from Nathaniel.

Got the tickets I wanted. Will pick you up at eight. Bring a coat and wear something warm. I’ll bring chairs and blankets. xx

She had absolutely no idea what he had in mind; clearly he wanted to keep it a surprise. But he had at least told her information she needed to know.

Thank you. Am intrigued.

She wrinkled her nose, then added,

Where are we going? Xx

Out. xx

That was the reply, followed by a smiley face.

OK. She’d stop asking and let him enjoy making the surprise.

See you tomorrow. xx

Rebecca was in Theatre the next day when he was on a break, and he was in a delivery suite during her break, so she didn’t get to see him until he picked her up at eight.

When he rang her doorbell, Saskia beat her to answering the door.

‘Hey. Nice to meet you properly, Nathaniel. I’m Saskia,’ she said.

‘Nice to meet you, too,’ he said, shaking her hand.

‘Enjoy your evening.’ She glanced at the bags slung over his shoulder. ‘Are you taking my big sister on some kind of picnic?’

‘Oh, no,’ Rebecca said, ‘because I’ve already had dinner and you didn’t warn me not to.’

‘It’s not a picnic. Wait and see,’ he said.

She rolled her eyes. ‘Man of mystery, are we?’

He glanced down at his jeans and light sweater. ‘I really should’ve dressed all in black and worn dark glasses.’

Saskia laughed. ‘He’s not going to tell us what you’re doing tonight, Bec. Have fun, you two. I have a date with a good film and a mug of hot chocolate.’

Rebecca still didn’t have a clue what they were doing until they reached the park and she saw the signs. ‘We’re going to a pop-up cinema showing of Dirty Dancing?’

‘Is that OK?’ he asked.

‘I love that film. Especially that bit where Patrick Swayze rescues Baby from her parents.’ She smiled. ‘Great choice. Thank you.’

‘Good. We have fold-up picnic chairs—borrowed from my sister—a fleecy blanket, and I was planning to get us hot chocolate.’

‘Let me get them,’ she said.

He shook his head. ‘My idea, so I’m paying. But you can message your sister to tell her you’re doing the same thing—except outdoors.’

Now she realised why he’d told her to wear something warm and bring a coat. While he was getting hot chocolate for them, she texted Saskia.

Pop-up cinema. Dirty Dancing! Xx

The reply came immediately.

Good choice. Keeper! Xx

‘OK?’ he asked when he came back.

‘Very. Thank you,’ she said.

There was something incredibly sweet and romantic about
