CHAPTER TEN

It took them ten minutes to get the birds out of the house.

The floor, on the other hand, was going on eight hours with no end in sight. Evan had been right to doubt their expertise in taking on a project of this size. It might kill them both.

Addie slipped off the mask protecting her nose and mouth from the endless amounts of dust. “Sawyer needs to go down for the night.” She paused her machine and leaned against it as if she might fall over without the support.

“That’s fine. We should probably call it quits. Go at it again tomorrow.”

Addie’s nose wrinkled at his suggestion as she scanned the floor. It definitely wasn’t done at a professional level, and there was a lot left to go.

They both moved into the kitchen, where Sawyer and Belay were hanging out—Sawyer drawing at the table, Belay snoozing at his feet, cramped amidst all of the living room furniture they’d shoved into the space.

“Time for bed, buckaroo.” Addie scooped him up from the bench.

“No-no-no.” Sawyer’s head shook with a vengeance. “I not tired!”

“Well, I am,” Addie retorted.

“I put you to bed, Mommy.” They laughed at Sawyer’s offer.

“I would happily take you up on that, but Mommy has more work to do.” Evan resisted a groan. Addie planned to continue? It was eight o’clock. They’d only stopped for sustenance twice today. His body was done. His everything was done.

And there was no way Addie didn’t need a break.

“I want Eban. Eban put me to bed.” Sawyer squirmed in Addie’s arms, then lunged.

Evan caught the boy midleap, and Sawyer’s little arms roped around his neck, clinging. How was he supposed to resist?

He silently asked Addie questions. What do you want me to do? Hand him back? Get out of your hair? Help?

“Do you mind putting him to bed with me? It might prevent a tantrum if we give in.”

“No problem.” Evan followed Addie to the back of the house. They swung by the bathroom, where she quickly brushed Sawyer’s teeth.

Despite his protest in the kitchen, Sawyer crawled right into his bed, which was a small mattress on the floor against the wall. The space was obviously too tight for an additional bedframe. Addie sat on the mattress with him, and Evan perched on the side of the double bed.

“Remember, you only get to sleep in a big boy bed if you stay in it.” Addie’s admonition to Sawyer was frayed at the edges—as if it had been used on repeat for every nap and bedtime. She turned to Evan, her explanation quiet. “He started climbing out of his crib back in Michigan, so it hadn’t been worth moving it.”

“Shocking.” His droll tone earned quirked lips from her.

“I knowed, Mommy,” Sawyer piped up. “I be good.”

“What should we thank God for today, Sawyer?”

“Belay.” He pulled the blanket up under his chin. “And Eban and Mommy and me.”

Being included in the grateful list wrenched a smile from Evan’s tired body. Addie said a quick prayer, adding in a few requests for safety and provision.
