CHAPTER ELEVEN

Will awoke to another fine August morning and could instantly tell that it was already too late for the early start he had promised himself they would make last night. The sun was lighting up an old armchair through the opposite bank of leaded windows from the ones that had lit Helena so seductively in the last rosy rays of the sunset last night as she more or less commanded him to make love to her and never mind dinner or anything else.

He recalled his pleasure with a wolfish grin and his mind went hazy again with sumptuous memories of her tangling up his senses over and over again until he hardly knew where he left off and she began. An image of his wife in extremis threatened to fog his mind as well as his vision again, but that simply would not do in full daylight. He blinked to remind himself it was late and too much of the day had already been wasted. Precious hours had flitted past while he lay sated for now and simply sleeping with his wife in his arms, dreaming of love instead of war for once.

The angle of that curious sun scolded him for such a lazy time of day to be waking up. High time he was busy keeping his wife alive and never mind well and truly loved. He bit back a fierce curse at his tardiness because he still didn’t dare to rouse the siren at his side because then they might waste a good deal more if he did and to hell with the killer on his track and everything else as well.

Even so, he could not help himself glancing at her asleep at his side and then he got distracted, wondering why he had thought she was too thin when he first set eyes on her again. Shock, he supposed. He had been so stupidly surprised she had changed from the bold and lusty bride he remembered and a much more honed and self-contained lady stood brazenly in Lady Helena’s shoes six and a half years on. Yes, she had changed and why hadn’t he expected it after all he and her family had put her through since last time they loved together?

This Helena was not as radiant and eagerly youthful as the daring society lady he remembered, but she was deeper and perhaps even truer to herself than she had been back then. He smiled at the thought of that Helena—bold and bad as she thought herself when they loved beyond reason without benefit of clergy the first time. He supposed he had expected her to be frozen in time after their wedding and furtive honeymoon and of course she had to disoblige him. She had had to go on with her life without him and he felt even more of a fool for thinking she would be exactly as he remembered her now.

He lay marvelling at the slender curves on show; she must have kicked the sheet off during the night.
