CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
âTHATâS A WRAP!â the director announced.
There was an eruption of applause. The car stunts were complete, which meant that it was time to leave Georgia and head back to California. She was going to book the next flight to Los Angeles that she could find.
âFriday night wrap party. Perfect timing,â Walker said. âI donât know about you, but I am ready to party.â
Partying wasnât exactly on Shelbyâs to-do list. Getting away from everyone with the last name Harper was. âIâm going to the hotel, so I can get on my computer and find me an early morning flight back to the City of Angels.â
âOh come on. You, of all people, deserve a fun night. How am I going to enjoy myself when I know youâre sitting alone in the hotel?â
âI feel like youâll figure it out because you do not need to worry about me one bit. I am going to shower, order room service, pack and go to bed.â
âShelby!â A production assistant waved a hand to get her attention. âShelby Young?â
âYeah.â
âWeâve got someone trying to get past security.â The man pressed the button dangling from the cord attached to his headset. âWhat was the name again? Youâre breaking up.â He waited for an answer. âSomeone named something Harper wants to talk to you. Do you want us to send them away or do you want to go to the checkpoint and sign them in?â
Seriously? She was so close to getting out of here and Ben had to show up now? Of course, she had been easy to find today. It had to be all over the news that they were shutting down sections of the highway to film scenes today.
Walker gave her that you-know-what-you-have-to-do look. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath in and out.
âIâll head over to the checkpoint.â
Walker gave her a thumbs-up. âYou need me to come with you?â
âI got this. Iâm sure heâs just here to tell me one more time that heâs sorry for assuming I would do what I usually do but didnât that one time.â
Shelby had resolved her feelings about what had happened between her and Ben. He really hadnât done anything wrong. Why wouldnât he think she assaulted that deputy? When had she ever given him any reason to believe she could control her emotions or think before she acted? Never. Ben had done what his dad had been waiting for him to do for the last ten years: see Shelby for what she was.
She fixed her ponytail and headed for the checkpoint. She was still dressed as the movie character. Thank goodness she had a jean jacket to cover up the crop top. This was a good look on Vanessa. Shelby wasnât a fan of showing so much skin in real life.
âShelby Young. Iâm here to sign in Ben Harper,â she said when she got to the security checkpoint.
âBen Harper?â The security guard flipped through the papers on his clipboard. âNot Ben Harper.â
âCurtis Harper,â a voice said from the other side of the checkpoint table.
