Chapter Fifteen
REMI
I pressed my face into Wilâs chest and laughed like a lunatic trying to smother herself. âThatâs probably best. I need to figure out how to break the news to my friends that Iâm a wedded woman, especially since I havenât had a boyfriend in over a year.â
âNot if you ask Barbara and Susan. Theyâve been thinking for over a month that weâre a couple.â
Wilâs joke sent me spiraling into another laughing fit. If I wasnât careful, Granny and Maren were going to hear us, and if Granny went snooping like she usually did, there was no amount of explaining that wouldnât make that situation awkward.
When I inhaled to catch my breath, Wilâs cologne came with it. On Sharpie, his trademark fragrance was repugnant, but emanating from Wil, itâs deliciously irresistible.
Except, along with amateur psychologist, Iâd also bequeathed upon myself the title Queen of Self-Control. I could flick the naughty habit of sniffing handsome men away like an ant on the kitchen countertop.
One more innocent whiff, then I let him go and retreated to my side of the closet. Not that there really were sides. With Wil in there with me, there was barely space not to be touching him. Proximity charged my nerves, but I reminded myself it was the escapade that made my heart stutter, not Wil. How many times did a person get to hide in a broom closet to escape an awkward conversation? Not every day.
Someday, this would make for an awesome story.
âRight. Same for me. No girlfriends since my ex left.â Wil folded his arms, which crossed over to my line of the closet. I was already leaning as far away as I could, even with handles from a bucketful of tools poking into my lower back. Wil might not have noticed, but his forearms were coming dangerously close to grazing my chestal region. He mustâve read my mind, because he frowned and straightened his arms at his sides. âI kind of figured weâd get to know each other better before we share our joyous news, so people donât think weâre nuts. I mean, itâd be weird if we told people we were married, but I didnât know your favorite pizza toppings and you didnât know what side of the bed I sleep on.â
âWeâre definitely nuts. Thereâs no getting around that.â I stifled a giggle with my hand instead of Wilâs chest. âAnd just so you know, pizza is best served with pepperoni, black olives, and cream cheese, and I sleep on the right side of the bed, so youâd better make space for me.â
Every square inch of me erupted with a blush, ignited by my flirty comment. Maybe Iâd sniffed a little too much of his cologne, but I wasnât purposefully trying to be all sassy and cute with Wil. He kept teasing it out of me, whether he meant to or not.
If I made Wil uncomfortable, he didnât say. Leaning toward the door, he listened intently. âYou think the coast is clear?â
I held my breath, though I could hardly hear over the staccato of my heart.
