5. Research Context

The aim of the research was to identify significant generic factors that supported community resilience so that a generic model of community disaster resilience could be developed using Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological theory. The purpose of the research was to develop a model for application to diverse disaster locations and in diverse geographical contexts. To achieve this, four disaster impacted communities were selected as sites for testing: Beechworth and Bendigo in Victoria and Ingham and Innisfail in Queensland, Australian regional towns recovering from bushfire (Black Saturday fires, 2009), prolonged drought (∼1997–2010), multiple successive floods (2009), and cyclone (Cyclone Larry, 2006) respectively. The study sites were located in northern, tropical and southern, temperate areas of Australia respectively. The four sites of interest were chosen because they exemplified communities impacted by different types of disaster events ( Figure 2).
