Chapter Eight

I pressed the heel of my hand into my forehead as soon as she was out the door. Fuck me. Well, don't because you're my client and I'm your therapist and even though I think you're freaking gorgeous you could well be a crazy murderer and I don't want to jump into the middle of that shit, I hope you understand. My chest was bubbling with rage, but between my legs was a different story. My body reacted to her words, wanting her, desiring more. That's why I had to get her out of my office, relying on my anger to get me out of the situation- if I hadn't, who knows what I might have done.

God, this was a fucking mess. I should have dropped her as soon as I realized our connection, but by now I was too invested. I wanted to help her- and I wanted to get to the bottom of whatever had happened that day. I paced around my office, my brain whirring. If I couldn't get it out of her, where else was I meant to get it from?

Before I knew it, I was in my car and heading down to her precinct. I knew this was probably a long shot, but I needed to find out everything I could about this case if I wanted to help her to the best of my abilities. With the majority of her squad mates already dead, the only person left to go to was her commissioner. I tried to call ahead, but got no answer, so before I chickened out I forced myself out into my car and on to the road.

It was a long drive back into town, or at least it felt like it. It was probably just the fact that my brain was ticking over with thoughts- time seemed to go slower when I was all up in my own head. Lisa was obstinate, that was for sure- but had that come before the incident, or because of it? Had she put up a barrier to push other people away to throw off suspicion about her role in the killings, or was this just a part of who she was? I had no idea, and I prayed that the commissioner would have some answers for me.

By the time I arrived at the station, it was getting late- the streetlights had popped on above me as I parked my car, and when I walked inside the building was almost entirely empty. A receptionist glanced up at me, and waved me over with a tight smile.

"Hi," she nodded, "What can I do for you?"

"Um, I'm here to see the police commissioner?" I managed, feeling stupid.

"I haven't got anyone down for an appointment," she frowned at her computer.

"It's about…" I leaned in close, hoping I still had some leverage. "Lisa Hills? I'm Everly Thompson, her therapist."

The woman's eyebrows shot up, and she nodded.

"Give me a moment."

She vanished through a door behind her, leaving me standing awkward and alone in the middle of the reception.
